Darkest Dungeon on sale at GOG... I'd appreciate any opinions

Post by jack54 »

This seems to be a Love it or Hate it. I like the 2D art style and the game play looks deeper than my first impression. Main complaints I see are random hits taking out your well developed characters and repetitive gameplay .

$9.99 I'm really tempted.

You got that right. You lose quests. You lose characters. Survivors are wrecked both physically and emotionally, and you need to take care both kinds of wounds for them. That appeals to players who give it positive reviews. But I found some game mechanics stupid: healing can only be done in combat engagement and not outside of it! Maybe for that reason I rather play Phantasy Star II
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

What is badly done with DD is you need to play using its wiki, because your characters have no memory of what they have done or tested.

Here's my 2 cents. I give it a big thumbs up. I think this game depends on the attitude you approach it with. This is not even close to my type of game but like you I was drawn to the art style and presentation. I considered for awhile before pulling the trigger and I'm glad I bought it. The game tells you up front with a pop up, this game is about making the best of a bad situation, characters will die, the RNG will jump up and bite you time to time....deal with it..that's pretty much the games attitude toward you, I'm OK with that, if your easily frustrated maybe not for you. I don't play games like this often and probably have a different take then others more familiar with genre. I find it to be one well put together game. The choices all have weight and meaning to me, and I spend a lot of time considering the choices in the town screen. Who do I heal or treat, who gets the upgrade, which buildings do I upgrade, who do I hire and fire, they all have meaning and most take gold. Then there's outfitting your party, who you taking, in what order and what gear. Which dungeon to take on, do you stretch and go for the tougher dungeon with more gold and treasure, is your team up to it, there's a lot of choices to consider and I spend a lot of time on it. Been my experience, which is limited with these types of games, is that they all get somewhat repetitive, but I was so invested in the gameplay choice I didn't notice, at least not yet. You will scream in joy and pain with this game, at least I do. When that character you nurtured, invested gold in dies, you'll be bummed .....deal with it...that's the games attitude toward you. Is it unfair at times, yes....deal with it, but I find so far it kind of, almost evens out, because sometimes that character survives when you thought they were a goner. If you decide to get it, some very general advice, don't fall behind the money curve or the upgrade curve, meaning keep a savings and be careful which characters you invest in.....O, have a B team also. It's a tough game and you may fail....but as the game says....deal with it.
Hope this helps.

there's truth in this - just listen, play for 800 hours and you'll understand... [:D] (the game not the song, doh...)

budd thanks for taking the time and posting such a detailed report. I've been following this game for a couple of months but couldn't pull the trigger. I've got other unforgiving survival games (Darkwood and Deadnaut) so I think I understand the approach you're speaking about...

I'd rather play another run through or first time through of Diablo II than it.

I think you'll enjoy it, prepare your four letter words[;)].......characters will die, I hold off renaming them for awhile. Its like the game is some kind of bully beating the crap out of you and you just want some payback, persevere is the word of the day. Enjoy the ride.

I'm waiting for the Crimson Court to get a good sale them i'm all over it.

Same, I don't want to pay much for a game that must be played with a wiki (to prepare the raids).

A little wiki reading will help, not required though to play the game, just to help lessen the pain[:)]. Went in cold on my first try, got chewed up by day 7, consulted wiki. Don't think I had to, I just took a shortcut.

Now I'm reminiscing the days before wikis when we could play a game even without reading the manual. Seriously: Ultima Underworld is one heck of a diverse and large (if not massive) game, and I was crafting torches and stuff the first time I played it. For Minecraft I had to look up stuff on wiki and YouTube.
