Cavalry in the CS Series

Had a look at the Polish Armed Forces link in the “East Front III – Polish” thread and it certainly gives a lot of very good detail. Its also a reminder that this is the first game in the updated CS series in which Cavalry are going to be a significant player.

First came across the way the game’s engine dealt with Cavalry back in the late 1990’s with the original East Front game and even then the way they were handled stood out as robust and effective. The facility to mount and dismount and once you have done so move the mounts and their associated horse holders independently worked cleanly and continues to do so. Suspect the robust cavalry model is one of the most underused assets in the series.

However something else that stands out from the Polish Armed Forces link in the “East Front III – Polish” thread (in particular the detail on the organization of cavalry units) is the proportion of a cavalry units manpower that was not available for combat when the unit dismounted as they were required to act as horse holders. This issue is one that all mounted units have to deal with.
Is this reflected in the game already (for example by reducing the fire and melee strength of dismounted cavalry units ? If not would EFIII be a good time to introduce this?

Then of course the new recon rules in the game could be used to increase the value of some cavalry units also.

We won’t get to it for a while but cavalry in the CS series will come into their own with the Great War Game and the associated Russian Civil War and Russo Polish War.

Not that you actually have to wait as the Great War Mod built on the JTS East Front II game is available for download on the The Blitz website. Russian Civil War and Russo Polish War scenarios featuring cavalry and armoured trains are already present.
