Gameplay Question: Reduced attack ?

Korsun Pocket is a the second game using the award winning SSG Decisive Battles game engine. Korsun Pocket recreates the desperate German attempt to escape encirclement on the Russian Front early in 1944. The battle is a tense and exciting struggle, with neither side having a decisive advantage, as the Russians struggle to form the pocket, then try to resist successive German rescue efforts and last ditch attempts at breakout.

Gameplay Question: Reduced attack ?

Post by AstroCat »

I'm a total newbie to the game system, I've worked through the tutorials but now I'm trying my first "real" game.
Question:
I have come across the situation where my base attack says 15, with division it is +7 = 22.
I should have the division bonus, all division units are right next to each other.
When I go to attack a unit I am given the base attack rating of 14.
How is this possible, what is the factor that makes my base attack 14? This is not 15 or 22!
I looked through the manual and player's guide many times but I just can't seem to find an answer. I thought the base attack was always either with or without division bonus. So why is it 14?

Thanks so much...

Astrocat,

are you able to post a screenshot of this attack so we can have a closer look at what you are seeing? It's difficult to work out what is happening from your post.

Reduced attack value

Post by Matthew Urch »

Is the game halving the units attack value due the minor river, dropping the fraction and then applying the divisions integrity bonus (15/2 =7.5 rounds to 7, +7 for the DI)?

I think this is how attack strength is always calculated when it is affected by terrain.

On an interesting side note a units divisional integrity bonus is expressed as a percentage (this much we all know!!). This is a percentage of a unit's defence strength (usually higher), but applied to both the attack and defence strength. For example in the "last stand at Korsun" scenario 57 fusiliers of the German 57th inf division has two steps, with an attack strength of 5 and a defence of 7. The DI bonus is 75%. You might expect the unit to have and attack strength of 9 (5+(5*.75) gives 5+3.75 =8.75 round it up to 9). It actually has an attack strength of 10. (5 +(7*.75=10.25 round down to give 10.)

Use this unit to attack across a river and you have an attack strength of 7. (attack 5 halved and round down gives 2 + DI bonus of 5 to give 7).

Ok this is the deal ladies and gents..

The scenario in question here is a user made scenario, Chris made it. Im pleased to see someone is playing it.. :)

Whats been posted so far is correct. The reason that the unit isnt using its full attack strength plus divisional bonus is because its attacking across a minor river.

The first hint of this is shown on the top image above, see the orange arrow (or triangle) just under the exit button on the combat control panel. That orange arrow arrow tells you that the unit attacking from that direction is not attacking at full strength.

Now if you look at the CRT's for that scenario you will see why its not attacking at full strength. Click on the Minor River CRT and you will see that combat is halved when its across a minor river in the snow.

Voila... thats your answer.

There is no bug in the game, the scenario designer has created this scenario to make minor river combat halved.
Isn't that bizarre?

Well spotted gentlemen. Because of all the open ground in Wiking Whiteout, which can be quite devastating if you are trying to defend on it, I made a compromise by halving river combat (which I think departs from the main Korsun scenarios).

Note that there are no major rivers in this scenario - the one you can see on the map actually plays like a minor river. It was felt the major river gave far too much defensive advantage to the Germans.

Thanks for straightening me out...I really did look through the 2 manuals a lot to try and find an answer but I couldn't find one.
According to the manual those arrows are for tactical steps and it doesn't mention that it also could mean a reduced attack as well.
Now, if it does say that somewhere, I admit I must have overlooked it.

Thanks again for clearing this up! :)

Got the 'orange' info straight from Roger himself.
Isn't that bizarre?
