Clarifications

Post by jcax101 »

Hi,

Typically play stock scenario 1, but I suppose these questions might be pertinent for several scenarios:

1) Usually load oil at Brunei rather than Miri because the Brunei port is bigger which results in the oil 'stockpiling' at Brunei between pickups. Brunei is built out so that the total Port + AF size is 9 which means there is no spoilage. However Brunei only has 20 oil centers meaning any oil over 20,000 wouldn't be stored. At Brunei, will the spoilage rule override the oil center rule?

2) Do you need to set the CAP altitude of the night fighters with the up cannon (Irving for example) below the expected enemy altitude?, If the CAP altitude is higher than the enemy, and provided there is sufficient notice of a raid, does the program adjust the Irving's altitude below the bombers so that it can use the up cannon?

3) During a January 1943 IJN strike on some USN CVEs, the combat report said the IJN raid was detected by radar at 60 nm. Is that just a script because I thought radar didn't detect beyond the hex? If the range of a radar is > 40nm I thought that meant extra chances of detection in the hex. The IJN raid didn't fly over any other bases or Allied TF.

4) When using air transport is there a damage level of the receiving AF that prevents the transports from flying. Not AB assault. No enemy CAP nearby but receiving AF was damaged. Transports wouldn't fly until all the damage was fixed at receiving AF then the transports flew the next turn. No weather issues.

Thanks. Love the game and forum support.

1. Oil and resources are not affected by spoilage, only fuel and supply.

Edit: You can use Miri to haul oil/fuel too. I usually use both.

2. No, the fighters patrol at that altitude then adjust up or down depending on the altitude of the enemy bombers.

3. Could be CAP, or any of a number of things that spotted them, not just radar.

4. It's either 50% of either airfield or service damage -or- 50% of the two combined to prevent planes from flying missions out of a damaged airfield.. Can't remember which. Note that it is possible to fly from airfields with some damage. Just because a plane doesn't fly doesn't necessarily mean it's because of airfield damage. Weather can shut down an airfield too.

I believe the max oil you can store in a base is based on the oil production at that base, not the size of the port.

And like Mike said, haul from Miri too.. I usually haul oil from one and fuel from the other. Use those 1250 size tankers to haul from there to CRB. Its a short trip and CRB is on the rail so it will move freely to other locations where it may be needed - or you can load it into larger ships there for the trip home.

It is runway damage that prevents aircraft flying. Service damage just affects ability to repair and launch coordinated strikes. e.g. CAP might not be sustained at higher levels of % because the planes cannot be serviced fast enough.

As stated Oil and Resources are not subject to 'spoilage'. They do however have a maximum amount that may be stored at a base before no more are added to the pool. A cursory search of the manual turned up nothing, but I know its in there and I will endeavor to locate the reference later.

Personally I don't load anything from Brunei, but that's just me. Keep in mind that bonuses are given when loading vessels at the site of the item (oil/resource) and is dependent on the total produced at said location. See 6.3.3.2.5 p127. There's another reference that's more specific, but again I don't have the manual on this computer and a cursory search of the hard copy isn't giving me what I want. Will search further later.
If the range of a radar is > 40nm I thought that meant extra chances of detection in the hex.

That's correct. Each device, radar, sound device, observer squad, has one chance to detect a raid. If the range of the device is >40nm it gets multiples thereof for detection attempts.

Excellent question. At what level of damage is the receiving air field shut down to transports, and is it even in the game, or was it just missed? All I can say is 'I don't know'.

Now I guess it is still possible to 'drop' supplies and/or troops, but this would effect both the range and types that could then be given to said base.
