Creating impassable hexes?

Post by Jabod »

When designing a scenario, is there a way to designate certain hexes as blanked-out and out-of-play? I couldn't find a straightforward way to do this.

For example, there may be territory that is owned by permanently neutral countries. Would be weird to represent these as separate regimes.

Being able to blank out hexes would also mean I wouldn't need to paint remote parts of the map with inhospitable terrain that aren't actually needed for operations.

In fact, I am wondering if there are alternatives to rectangular maps. The old hex boardgames routinely used to cut off parts of the map, using the space for tables etc. But I don't see a simple way to do this.

Yes, there is.

You make a new landscape type. Set all movement types for it requiring 999 APs, and you are good to go.

You could also make one new regime. Call it neutrals, and then make it so that nobody can interact with it by enabling a diplomatic block on it.

Of course both methods can be used in conjunction :)

Thanks! Both ideas make excellent sense.

I figured that this would be possible, but was a bit surprised that the editor's default options don't include out-of-play hexes.

No problem.

About the editor. It may be that it doesn't have many of the options you might expect of a simple editor. I like to think that the editor is really a well oiled but complex machine that makes you think creatively. Most things are possible in the editor one way or another, so just hang in there :)

Yeah, I've had some fun times with the engine editors of many alike games, and I like this one. Gives you a LOT of power.
