I think there was some solution with the retreat hex issue, I searched the posts about this and this is what I came up with:

Originally posted by Antonius:
Have run a serie of tests buliding random battles using a custom map: whenever I set the battle in the same MONTH as the one that was selected in the scen editor when I edited the map, I got the retreat and reinforcement hex where I had placed them.

So I think we should try this, and not use the generic maps that are too open.

Btw. what's the agreement on reinforcements? Allowed or not, and if allowed, which turn can they be requested?

Manicalmonkey: got your mail, my hotmail had put it in the junkmail folder so I didn't notice it at first.

I'll set it up on august 44, is vis 25 good enough?

EDIT: I also read that the nations should be the same in the editor screen and in the battle setup. I'll check this tonight.

I think the idea was to use large, open maps? We should then use a random big one, they tend to have fairly open fields - or try to get Frank's 100x160 one operational.

fought at all.

Let's first try to fix Franks 100X160 map, those generated ones look like seas of land with a tree density of 1 tree per squarekilometer, and that is hardly enough cover for any flanking movement that was the original purpose of the using of these large maps.

Agreed, Frank's map has some very nice options for all kinds of neat tactical manoeuvres. I've been messing around with the setup, would it be an option to use "Random Start"? I assume the game will properly link reinforcement/retreat hexes to the random start locations?

If random starts help then I have nothing against it. Have you tried to change the nations and time setting in the editor? Are you familiar in editing the maps? Anyway I'll try to fix it tonight and let's see how it turns out then.

All participants: What's the agreement on reinforcement points? I vote that reinforcements are allowed and can be requested from turn 10. What do you think?

Well, I can fix the map without trouble, but the Editor doesn't seem to let me save it as a map (only as a scenario). Can I simply rename the scenario files to map ones?

PS: I could also name some of the major terrain features, that might help make the DAR's a bit easier to write and comprehend, for instance "Hill 112" instead of "The hill just East of the river in the north-western part of the map..." you get the idea :)

You can save the map by pressing E in the mapeditor. there is also a button on the right panel with a disk icon on it.

Naming the hills is a great idea :)

Got it!

OK, I think I've fixed the map. Use this one as 5000 pts. GER (left) vs US (right), august '44. Vis 25, 30 turns, Weather 1. I've tested it and it should be OK.

I numbered the hills, attached letters to road interstections (IS "A", IS "B", etc.), and named the major forest areas. When writing your DAR's, you should never be far from a named feature so people know what you've doing :)

Everyone ready to rumble?

hi !

took a look at your map.

nice ! esp. the names "monkeyville" :D

there is a good change that this will work!

reeinforcements turn 10 seems okay.
>>>august '44. Vis 25, 30 turns, Weather 1

this is okay, too !

mmhh.. sadly my planned opp. doesn´t react. so i must find a new one.

but the newbie game + the vet game can start. i post 2 threads in the DAR section there you can continue then !

ps: shouldn´t the US be on the left side ?

ManicalMonkey: Now that Germany is on the left side i think you should then be player 1. That's ok with me, can you make the setup and your purchase and then send it over to me?

Looking forward playing this one :)

Ah, I didn't know sides were linked to players #'s... And now that you mention it, yes, it does seem more sensible for the Americans to come from the West in '44 :P

Oh well, no big deal, it's a fictional engagement anyway.

I'll start up the PBEM and have it in your email today, Sonni.

May the best man win!

ManicalMonkey I purchesed my force and what I found out was that the map was still messed. the starting lines were in the middle of the map, and the reinforcement and retreat hexes were on the wrong sides. It seems that the US player should be player 1 in order to get this thing right.

I started a new battle and it should now work in the right order as I tested it three times and all was ok everytime.

So for all other participants: It seems that player 1 must allways play the US, and that the map must be saved in the editor with the same time and nation settings as in the battle.
