How is this game?

Post by Antmf_slith »

Love me war games and this looks massive. How daunting is this game ad now much more complicated is this over WiTE? Also is this Wego as opposed to the WiTE system? Please let me know. Oh, and does this ever go on sale?

Yes its WEGO.

Leaves WITE in the dust when it comes to level of detail.

Very steep learning curve.

Once you experience the war with one day turns you will never have a desire to go back to games with weekly turns.

Was hugely disappointed in WITW due to the weekly turns and heavily abstracted air game.

New player here, therefore I can answer few quesions:
How daunting is this game ad now much more complicated is this over WiTE?

This game has a really steep learning curve but is totally worth the time spent on it, anyhow you are not alone because lot of forumites are helping me, moreover you can find dozen of helpful threads.

I don't know for WitE but I think is more complex.
Also is this Wego as opposed to the WiTE system?

Absolutely better, you don't know your opponent moves and you cannot plot your plans knowing where the enemy units are placed because they can change position before you reach them, and in a naval game this is a huge bonus!
Oh, and does this ever go on sale?

Not sure, maybe holidays sales.

Great game. It is the best value in a war game that you will ever experience. And yes, it goes on sale a few times a year. Oh, did I say it's a GREAT GAME.[;)]....GP

How did you guys learn the game?is there an online tutorial on YouTube and you guys can recommend or good read that would help me get started? I do have war in the east but I get kind of bored with it even though I don't know exactly what I'm doing as far as supply and the supply chain but I just hate that's system I rather wego. And I like more naval and air warfare as opposed to ground or combination of three. Please let me know thanks.

I learned by just playing the game and restarting as nescessary. It's like on the job training. Also, you must read the manual. Even though it's a little bit dated. Then read some of the how to stuff and some AAR's. Some of the other players will steer you to the best reading material. Scenario wise, I started with scenario 1 and restarted a bunch of times. Some knowledge of the pacific war is helpful. But even after playing WITPAE and classic WITP I still learn something new every day. I also forget something new every day.[:D] Well, jump in and have fun....GP

The game has been out for almost 10 years and is supported by a very active forum community and is not supported by the developers any longer. So no steam release....GP

So this game that is so old still stands up in today's WW2 type similar games? Just wondering if it is worth 80 dollars or should I get a more present day WW2 similar game wil dlc's? Unless there is o game that can match this one?

The Useful Info for Beginners thread is well, useful for getting an idea of the resources available on the forums.

To get an idea of the gameplay, here's a current "Let's Play" style multiplayer campaign on YouTube from both the Allied and Japanese perspectives.

I came to this from Hearts of Iron 3. This game leaves Hearts of Iron in the dust.

Nothing has came close to this game regarding emulating the Pacific War, and I've played most all the big titles out there.

Is installing this game on Win 10 a pain or just a regular install?

Most of us have played numerous strategy games over the years. I got started way back with the Axis & Allies board game when home computers were still relatively rare.

I agree 100% with mind_messing, no game matches this for depth in the Pacific theater. There are titles with better graphics out there, but you'll lose much of the depth to get them. Also, the graphics of WitP:AE have a charm of their own and were made easily moddable by the devs. I've modified everything from the map, UI, unit art, icons, you name it. My install looks nothing like when I first installed it. Many graphical enhancements are freely available on the forums in addition to new scenarios made by a passionate community.

There's a little bit of tweaking required at first to get the game running just right for your particular computer, and it primarily has to do with using the correct "switches" on the executable. I made a utility to help with that - see my signature. The game runs perfectly on my Win 10 machine. Once I got the right combination of switches for my machine, I haven't needed to tweak any settings since.

SeaBee is not required to install the game, but it's intended to make configuring it much faster and easier than doing it manually. The mods are scattered about the forums, but any of the regulars here can help point you to the appropriate place(s) based upon what you're interested in.

I'm also working on an "art guide", so be on the lookout for that in the near future. It will attempt to link to all of the graphical mods in one convenient place, and I'll update it if I miss any.

Thank you, I am presently watching The Historical Gamer vs XTRG allies vs Japan and the map looks great. Do you know what mods he is using and where to get them or is that the default map and graphics?

I'm sure he's using ChemKids maps, they're currently in the void as my understanding is that they got hit on the head for copyright reasons.

Best bet is to ask over at XTRG's discord server.

DOCUP put up a Dropbox with the maps.

I wasn't aware of any copyright issue, but that would explain the manner of Chemkid's departure from the forums.

The UI and combat screens can be obtained from Jace's Site (the UI elements are called "Map Borders" there).
