BNC's Napoleonic Wars 1798-1815

Post by BiteNibbleChomp »

"If any of you will shoot his Emperor, here I am."
- Napoleon, March 1815, to soldiers sent to capture him after his escape from Elba.

The first two decades of the 19th century by the actions of one man in a way rarely seen before or since. To his subjects he was the glorious Emperor, to his enemies he was the Ogre of Europe. Napoleon’s armies brought France unprecedented glory as they marched to the four corners of the continent and beyond – from Acre to Austerlitz; from Madrid to Moscow, in an attempt to spread the ideals of the French Revolution to lands that had previously only known kings.

And now, you can take his place, in BNC’s Napoleonic Wars for Strategic Command.

This mod comes with six scenarios, including the massive 1805 Napoleon on the March campaign covering the entire war between 1805-1814 at a corps scale. It is playable as both France (which may be joined by the Ottoman Empire) and the Coalition (which at varying times may include Great Britain, Austria, Russia, Spain, Prussia and Sweden). Additional start dates for the main campaign begin at 1809, 1812 and March 1813, as well as the separate scenarios for the 1798-1801 War of the Second Coalition (including Napoleon’s war in Egypt) and the Waterloo campaign of 1815.

The map of Europe has been adapted to fit the realities of nineteenth-century warfare: much of Russia is sparsely populated (which will make supplying forces there difficult), railroads do not exist so armies may only move as quickly as they can march. Replacements and new conscripts will be slow to arrive, while battles may be bloody and decisive – a defeated army may find itself forced to retreat a great distance after a major battle in order to regroup. In Spain, the resistance will defy your attempts to control and pacify the country: no French unit is safe from the guerillas.

In this campaign, the actions you don’t take will be just as important as those that you do: start one too many wars and you may find yourself facing more enemies than you can handle. You will need to plan your moves years in advance – new technology and tactics will take time to develop, and armies can be formed from scratch only slowly. Various decision events allow you to take actions very different from those seen in history – should France send aid to the Ottoman war effort against Russia in the hopes of gaining an ally? Do the British dare gamble on Denmark’s neutrality or attack their navy to ensure it doesn’t fall into Napoleon’s hands? Should Archduke Charles build the Austrian army with a defensive or offensive strategy in mind?

AI behaviour has also been randomised and designed to react to your strategies: a powerful invasion of Russia may see the Russian army withdraw deep into the country to allow the freezing winter and attrition to destroy the Grande Armee, while a weak invasion may be promptly crushed by a sudden Russian counterattack. It has other tricks too, but I’m not going to tell you all of them now [;)]

Of course, the mod also comes with period-appropriate unit graphics, in both 3D and NATO-style counters. HQs also carry regimental standards instead of their country’s national flag. Popup and battle sounds of nineteenth-century weapons have been included*, as well as a 36-page strategy guide detailing every aspect of the mod.

I hope you enjoy my latest creation,

* = I am aware of a bug in the game that means these new sounds won’t play correctly for certain events. A fix is detailed in the strategy guide.
