Diplomacy on Spain

Post by Manfred »

Hi Guys, I am currently playing the Axis in a PBEM game, and I invested all possible diplomacy chits on Spain, and I was able to get many success. Unfortunately for me, I think that on 5 success, I had 3-4 times a 4% increase and the best result was 7%. It's the first time I see such a thing. In my (old) previous games, it was not unusual to have a 10-15% increases per success.
Oh, and should I mention that when finally the USA came into the war, my opponent got an immediate success and Spain moved 17% towards the allies, ruining my Strategy (I was about to take Algeria and align Spain).
Did I miss a patch or something ?

It can be just luck (and, in fact, the game is using random numbers to determine when diplomacy succeeds). In a game recently, I spent everything on diplo in Spain and saw a meager 4% move once. Then in the mirror I forgot to block the Axis diplo and he got a shift of 21% on turn 1! I quickly put everything I had in Spain.

The bump to Spain's mobilization value is 4-8%, with a 33% chance that it will actually be 12-24%, so sometimes it will swing a lot more, but not always.

OK thank you, is that specific feature for Spain related to a patch ?

I think the patch ( 2 or 3 back I think) impacted all diplomacy.

There are other ways of moving Spain towards the Axis.

And what are those ways?

Take Gibraltar and Egypt, and remove all allied forces from Oran and Casablanca. If you then reached 60% leaning, you may entice Franco.

I've seen Spain's Axis leaning shoot up like a rocket when I (the UK) had 3 chits invested, couldn't understand why. There must be other factors I'm unaware of.

Diplomacy follows easy rules: 1 chit cancels another of the opposite side. If GB has 3 chits invested, the only reasons the leaning can change are:

- the Axis has more or less chits invested (Germany and Italy can both invest 3 chits each)
- events like the french capitulation, Axis advance into Egypt, Seelöwe, occupation of Gibraltar

Use your french MPPs to deny Axis diplo success as long as possible, and the american ones asap. If Franco has a leaning of more than 60%, an invasion of Algeria is to be expected. Prepare to occupy Oran and Casablanca to deny the Axis the DE.

Thanks. I was certain that I had read that if more than one country invests chits, only the country with the greater # will be counted. Ie, if Germany invested chits 3 and Italy 2 chits, it would only count as 3 chits. And I've been playing under that assumption. However, I just looked and cannot find that, so I must have just confused it with the rule for opposing countries. Damn!

The % chance is the key and that is shown in the centre of the diplo dialog box. 3 chits of German diplo = 15% vs. 3 chits of UK = 15% = 0% chance of success for either side. However, 3 chits of US diplo = 21%, which is why you want to get Spain before they enter the war.

The US can put a max of 2 chits on Spain. 2 x 7=14 and with the UK's 3 chit it becomes 29%. The Axis can together have 30% if they put in 3 chits each. 1% isn't much but I've seen it happen.
