Custom sounds

The manual has this related to custom sounds:

You can customize the game sounds by editing the various .ogg files located in the Sound directory.
The campaign.ini file contains the line:
#CUSTOM_SOUND= 0
If you change the 0 to 1 and save the file then you will be able to use custom sounds. You will need to create a Sound subdirectory within your custom campaign directory for your customized items. Place your edited .ogg files there. The game
will then use these customized items instead of the default .ogg files.

My questions are:
- is there a naming convention that must be followed?
- how do we associate a sound with a unit?

For example, in a fantasy campaign I have made, I want sounds that are completely foreign to WW2. A naval unit will be a sailing ship, air units will have wings, and artillery consists of catapults and trebuchets. Currently, I have to play without sound or it just sounds way too weird!

Can WiE cater for this degree of customisation?

I believe the "convention" is simply a hard-coding of .ogg file names to specific sounds in the game.
You can find the standard .ogg sounds (and hence their filenames) here:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Matrix Games\Strategic Command WWII - War in Europe\Sound

I did exactly this in the "Bellum Galaxia" SiFi mod (e.g., ww2 in space) I've been working on.

Thanks, mroyer. That's pretty much what I thought would be the case. I have made a lot of changes in the localization.txt, so working out which sound files are associated with which units will take a bit of work but I'm sure the result will be worth it, as your sifi shows. Cheers.
