Some questions...

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Some questions...

Post by Yogol »

Hi, some questions about this great game!!!

1. As German, I have 3 panzer regiments in Sicily, a broken-down division: 1/15, 2/15 and 3/15 PzGren Div.
How exactly can I make them into one single unit again?

Because I tried and tried and I can't do it. I have put them all in the same hex, under the same commander, with no enemy units around and selected MERGE, but it always says "No units in this hex may be merged".

2. Can I split any unit German unit (e.g. the 44 Infantry Division)? If so, how?
And if not, how can I see which units I can split and which not?

3. Which leadership skill is used for the German Fallschirmjaeger when they fight on the ground? Is it the "AIR" leader ship skill or the "INFANTRY" one?

If it is INFANTRY, then what good does the AIR leadership skill of 7 on the German XI LW Flieger Corps do? It is a land unit, so I can't assign air-planes to it, can I?

4. I have noticed that -somehow- forts appear (in Sicily and Southern Italy) where my units are, even when there was never a Fortified Zone on that hex. Where do those forts come from?!?

I did buy a Fortified Zone in the South of Italy (-157, 284), but forts are also being build all around it too (e.g. on -157, 283 and -157, 282)

Any help is greatly appreciated, even if it is just one of the above questions!

1. Do they all have the same HQ? And do they all have at least one movement point left? If so, you should be able to hit the "b" key to rebuild the division.

2. You can split a division. Hit the "b" key to break it into three regiments.

3. It's the ground skill. Air is only used by leaders assigned to Air HQ's.

4. That one is new to me. I never play Axis, so have no experience with that.

units that have unused MP will automatically start to dig (there are a few secondary rules you can ignore for now), so I presume that is what is happening here. You don't need a FZ as such to dig in but they are quicker and get around the constraints (so are great for a back up line etc)

Roger,

By "fort" I thought he meant a separate fortification unit, but perhaps he meant his existing units fortified.

Thanks for all the answers!

And, yes, I just meant that a fortress appears, not a Fortification Zone unit.

Were you able to get that Panzer regiments to recombine?
