Interface - map covering up forms

Post by CounterMarch »

I rather doubt I'm the first to come across this, but searching the forums didn't find me an answer. I've been grinding through the manuals, tutorials, videos - and there's so much I may have cruised right by the information I needed, so apologies if this has been answered ... and answered ... and answered.

Playing on laptop, using the max resolution of 1366 x 768. I've set the toolbar to hide.

On loading a new game, the map comes up on top of all the gameplay forms that automatically load when a new game is started. This wouldn't be such a royal PITN if the map wasn't set permanently to being always on top.

I have to toggle the map closed, drag around and resize everything and then do the toggle open/closed dance to access the main form.

There are exceptions to the map being on top of course ... the unit setup form, a number of information and gameplay popups, etc. I find that often times a form opens behind the map and there are times where I cannot reach the hidden object. The map won't toggle sometimes and then I'm just right and proper stuck. The only recourse so far has to be killing the game from the Task Manager.

Is there a way to toggle to the map between "always on top" and ... "not"?

I suspect the problem is that the limited screen height is making this more difficult that it should be - but even so, having forms trapped behind an object seems problematic at best.

I can hook into a monitor and can run MWiF on two screens and either of those two options will probably solve this. It's inconvenient though and if there is something I'm doing wrong or missing, I'd prefer to be able to play on my laptop most of the time.

Any assistance appreciated. Thanks. :o)

Playing on laptop as well. Yes, sometimes forms are hiding behind other forms. Most of the times, I can fetch some corner and drag it in front and play normally. In very rare instances I have to save the game (solves problem sometimes already) and reload. Yes, I have to resize the detailed map every single time I start/reload a .gam file in order to use most monitor space, but I have not lost a game so far, there was always a solution, even if sometimes a little bit cumbersome. As you say, with a second monitor the problem is much less prevalent and you can use the global map easily, which I currently not employ in order to avoid the issue with too many windows piling on each other.

This is meant as an encouragement.

I play it on my laptop and on a desktop as well. In the desktop I have a bigger screen and can more or less have everything in a comfortable fashion. In my laptop I use one more screen and it's even better. Just a laptop gave me such problems as the ones you mention.

One thing not to have to reorganize everything every time is to create your own layout. Once you have it, it's simple to call it from the main form when needed. You can create one adapted to youe laptop or desktop screen or to that plus one more screen, for example, or have one for each case.
