British Empire HQs
Hi,
Can British units be attached to a South African HQ, or Malayan units to a Sudanese HQ etc.?

No. The same is true of the Australian and Canadian HQs. They can only attach units of their minor nationality, not British ones. So about their only other use is to boost supply.
RE: British Empire HQs
I'm not sure that is strictly true. In a recent game I found I could attach the Sudanese to an Indian HQ. And I'm sure the rules say that Canadians & British can be attached to each other. I think there may be other permutations as well - whether intended or not.
RE: British Empire HQs
It's been my experience that the land & air units of associated British minor nations like Canada, Australia, South Africa, etc, can be attached to British HQs. However, you cannot attach British combat units to the respective HQs of Canada, Australia and South Africa and the rest.
It's sort of the same principle where Hungarian or Rumanian HQs can't have German units attached to them, although German HQs can command Hungarian or Rumanian units.

RE: British Empire HQs
I am perpertually confused by these rules - IMHO it would be really good if the properties of the HQ can contain this information
I think
British HQs can attach UK and commonwealth units, but not Indian : not sure of other minors like Netherlands, DEI etc
US HQs can attach US and minors but also confusingly UK dominions (ANZAC, SA and Canadian) units but not UK or Indian?!?
Indian HQs can attach commonwealth (like South African) ~ not sure about ANZAC ~ but not UK : go figure
Also, i can't see any good reason why Australian HQ should not attach NZ or for that matter UK

I do ponder the usefulness of the Sudanese HQ (Platt). Unless the British ever decide to splurge MPPs on a few more Sudanese units, it will only ever have that one unit that starts the game near Khartoum to command as far as I can tell.

RE: British Empire HQs
Once at full strength it is useful for providing supply to all land units in East Africa
RE: British Empire HQs
Personally I often buy the 2nd Sudanese Corps to give Platt a wider role.

This has been my experience, too.

It also appears that French units can be under USA HQs

That would jibe with history. During the Westwall battles, the 1st and 2nd French Free Corps were under the direction of Alexander Patch's US 7th Army HQ.

Wait a minute: HQs can boost supply for units of other nations, too?!

Yes. Hit the "S" key twice. Take a look at the supply net. It's not like there will be different numbers for British and US units. It's all the same supply situation with HQs of both nationalities improving the supply numbers wherever they are. Italian and Axis minor HQs do the same for German units. It doesn't matter how bad or good the HQ leader is either.

That's not the whole story (I THINK the exceptions are all USSR and/or non-belligerence related)
But yes, generally HQs will boost supply for everyone on "their side"

Yeah, during that period of the game when might finally co-mingle, Soviet and Western Allied units run on different numbers. The lower number being in the parentheses.

Is this a modified map, by the way? I don't recall Maastricht or Liege on the default map.

Oh, that screen shot was taken from Strategic Command: War in Europe. The supply principles are the same in both games.
SC: War in Europe is only fought on a map of Europe, North Africa and the North Atlantic. But the scale is larger, so the map feels a lot roomier with more hexagons to maneuver in. The SC World War One game uses the same basic map but with different borders and some altogether different nations.

Ah, ok. I wish France and Benelux area had more cities and thus MPPs!
