What files?

In DWU, if I wanted to make minor changes to a specific race's ships/bases, I could easily edit the design text files by changing some numbers.

Where are the equivalent files in DW2? What are they named? And, will I need something other than a basic text editor?

Races.xml to edit races, ShipHulls.xml to edit ships layouts.

Use Notepad++ or Atom. Atom can read much bigger (and much faster) very large files than np++ but I'm not at ease with it.

Then maybe you will be so kind as to tell me how I would go about adding a fighter bay to a Human mining station (for example) so that the AI will create designs based on the added component.

In DWU, I would just edit the mining_station.txt and change the Fighter Bay tag to some number other than 0. Easy peasy.

I was looking for the same thing. I think that was even a later addition in DW1. Making your own ship templates in game pretty much get instantly changed by the AI, like in DW1. Once you could make the text file that the AI used for building, it was great. I hope that is coming soon.

Sorry, I did not try actively to do any mod, I just opened the files...
