Suggestion: Better support for ship variants

Post by boosthungry »

The game does a great job of allowing for variants within a ship class (eg, fast "fleet frigates" designed to lock down targets vs "heavy frigates" that are more damage focused) but the game doesn't provide much support for having more than one variant active per ship class.

Few things I noticed:
1) Fleet templates don't allow for specifying the number of each variant.

2) I'm pretty sure I saw my one variant attempting to auto-refit to my other variant, just because the other one was newer despite both being active.

3) It's not easy to tell at a glance which ships in a fleet are which variants without clicking on each one. Or even how many of each variant are in the fleet.

This is probably the #1 problem I'm facing right now and I'd love some better support for variants within a ship class. Ideally I'd like the ability to create two versions of even the same sub-class (two different "Heavy Frigates") and I should be able to easily manage them and they should each have their own upgrade paths, but I would be happy if the in-game sub-classes were at least given better support in the systems I mentioned ("Fleet Frigates" should only ever auto-refit into other "Fleet Frigates" and never into a "Heavy Frigates" design unless all "Fleet Frigates" designs are made obsolete). Just showing the sub-class in many of the menus would be a huge win for me.
