Garrison distribution between colonies

Post by lGSMl »

Please let me know if this is already implemented, because I feel like it really should be and I just miss some automation settings. Otherwise I feel this is a rather big issue that should be addressed.

Are troops automatically distributed between colonies according to templates? Because I do not see that in my playthrough.

If this is not the case - troop templates loosing a lot of meaning, because you can really use them only if colony has all possible facilities to produce every troop type or move them manually (which no one sane will ever do).

It tries to but does not work properly at least as far as I have seen I try to build a few extra transport ships to move troops around but normally they pick up some troops to transfer then get stuck in a constant loop of picking up and dropping off the same units between planets XD

I did this in DW:U, I had special troop transports, with exact size and loadout settings of my standard planetary garrison,
I loaded them up on my homeworld and sent them along with my colony ships,
I was planning to do the same in DW2

I think it should be possible to send troops between destinations similiar to characters.
It would not be imbalanced in my oppinion, because the same as characters the troops are not available to you,
once you sent them to their destination .. if you want to make it more immersive, use population transporters which require payment to the private sectors and include the option to loose your troops to enemy action

It has worked for me - I've watch transports distributing them between worlds to try to match up with the need.

If you have a save showing what you describe, could you please zip it up and upload it for us so that we can investigate?

No Problem had to use drop box to large for the forums attachment system.

How to find the transport if hotkeys work between saves it is on hotkey 3 otherwise it is a ship called the "Banished mutiny" around the planet "Kanes" it has been picking up and dropping off the same 4 troops now for decades

aha, ok, so this is what I observed. For me troop transporters on auto just loaded troops from the closest colony and stayed there with "(No mission)". I thought this is just default behavior of these ships on auto - load troops and wait. I will try to remember to upload save this evening, please ping me if needed and I still did not.

Are there any filled army templates?

In the most recent patches, army templates are missing for humans. So the colonies don't know how what distribution of troops to have.

Also is it possible to dictate via automation how many troops we want at each colony and what constitutes a border, minor and major colony?

The troop maintenance setting in the Empire Funding Levels determines the maximum amount of troops the AI will recruit. There is then a "Colony Garrison Level" and an "Attack Troop Level" setting in the automation Policy Settings which I assume determine the ratio of how the funding percentage is distributed between garrison troops and troops available for invasion fleets.

I don't think I've seen anything in the Galactopedia or Tooltips to imply that Border Colony/Standard Colony/Major Colony affects anything other than the template of troop type ratios. So I would assume it tries to distribute the total number of troops evenly across all your planets, with only the ratio of troop types differing. But I may be wrong - it would make sense to keep smaller garrisons on the standard colonies, but I can't see any indication of that.

And no, I don't think there's anyway to define what constitutes a major, standard or border colony (except by setting it manually per planet). I assume the game just does it automatically based on population level and proximity to borders - although that's only a guess.
