DW2 recommended for someone who loves the first one?

Post by Shogouki »

Basically the title. If I had plenty of money to spend I'd grab it without question but since I don't I wanted to see opinions of other DW:U lovers about DW2.

I guess I also wanted to be sure that there are planned expansions and continued support for DW2?

Thanks for any help!

A definite yes from me. I have thousands of hours in DW, and after some initial doubts I am completely converted to DW2.
There is some debate, but in perspective it usually shows how much love there was for DW1 rather than serioud doubts about DW2.
I guess I would read the forums a bit, ship design woes is a representation.

There will definitely be expansions in the future. I don't have any concrete information about this, but Erik has alluded to it on multiple occasions.

I'm finding that the game pacing is a lot slower than in DW:U, and I think that is to the detriment of the game.

I'm also finding myself battling with the automation, and the empire policy settings aren't as powerful as they were in DW:U

Thanks for the answers. I'll probably end up buying it so they get what little support my money brings. I just hope this game has a long life like DW1.

Yes from me, and I like the somewhat slower pace (though in DWU I always set the Tech to the slowest setting, so I'm weird that way...).

Oh I'm the same way, I like games that really take their time.

DW2 is good but it needs to mature to it's full potential before I will quit DWU completely.

Right now, to me, it feels like DW1 and Stellaris mashed together with both parts not quite fitting right. Just opinion, but the future is bright.

DW2 is good but I think it depends what you enjoyed most about DW:U. It has taken me a while to adjust from DW:U to DW2 and the hankering for the old game is still there sometimes, but then again I used to play a heavily modded DW:U and not the vanilla.

However, I'm sure with time and perhaps mods DW2 will become even better than DW:U. So, perhaps I would so say - Yes, but you could always wait a little if you needed.

Are mods planned in the future of DW2? Like in expansions?

Improved modding support is definitely something they have in mind. It'll probably have to wait until more pressing issues have been dealt with, but it's in the future.

If you liked DWU then yes DW2 is a safe purchase. Just know that like DWU its starting out as a bare bones game that will be fully fleshed out over the coming years as expansions are published. The good news is that we get roughly 80% of the old DWU content sans the added shakturi storylines and pirate play which is fine by me. At the moment the game needs a bit of polish on the various automation areas and interface but that was true of the very first release of DW1 on its way to the eventual DWU. Given how robust the feedback is I am sure most of the stuff people are complaining about will be patched in over the next few weeks to months.

I see a lot of the same goodness here as DW1, but the game needs time to fully mature. The DW1 game had probably close to a decade of work put into it after release and the end product was a joy to play. But I also loved the years of playing before DWU, so don't judge this game against the final version of DW1, judge it against the first version.

DW2 will be just as good as DWU perhaps better someday, but its just starting out on its journey and has a long way to go before it becomes as polished as DWU. I say buy it now as I doubt you'll have the patience to wait 10 years+ to play the final polished version. Does it have teething issues? Absolutely, but that's because of the switch to 3D and all the problems that entails. Some day they'll be worked out and then they'll build on the new engine with DLC's and new content and things will begin to really shine.

Yes definitely. Found it really unconvincing in my first playthrough, but then disabled most of the automation for the second game and consequently have remembered how to play it and am really loving it.

From what I can remember, the fundamentals of it are largely identical to DW1, albeit without some of the expansion features (like playable pirates) - it seems like mostly incremental improvements, but they're very good incremental improvements, and a much more up to date user interface.

And for a game this complicated, it seems mostly quite bug free - and they're patching the ones that are there pretty quickly. Have had some massive performance problems lategame on a max size galaxy with max empires, but i think they've said this is only affecting certain machines?

And given their track record with DW1 I'm very confident it'll become even better with updates and expansions. Although fair enough if you'd rather wait for those!

I like it. I agree it is slower than DW:U. I'm a little not liking the fact that I have to get certain "levels" of research before being able to research something (not very often, but it has happened).

I just don't even worry about ship design. I just upgrade and save and it does the rest.

Its awesome. I think anyone who really loves DWU could get some good value out of the game. Everything is new, but with the same private / state owned economies, so its familiar. Build ships, upgrade, upgrade, Build ships, upgrade, upgrade, Build ships, upgrade, upgrade.

No Securans though yet. Just humans and weirdos.
