What are those concentric circles?

Post by 100thMonkey »

First time I've seen these concentric circles (a fleet is selected). Do they have a special signification?

Don't bother: I've just realized it's the long range scanners (that I had discovered in my previous session).

Well, I'm kinda curious: what do they do, exactly? Presumably they see more ships and monsters?

It's a radar, during war it can warn of incoming fleets and make automated fleets move into position to counter them.

Yup most importantest technologie in the game.

Also I think it looks weird, a bit like the nebulas do.

Nope, its not radar.
It is shown even on Planets that do not have anything around it.
It came with the last update that I also stumbled upon this rings.
I wonder what it is. Maybe those rings are appearing because the colors have a lesser depth and those rings appear through a lack of more colors.

The ones on the Map are Longrange Scanners.
Which is why they have to be togelled on with "Long Range Scanners" viewmode.

The ones in the System view:
That is the normal planet "glow" of those Planetary Systems, while not on "High Dynamic Range Rendering".

Thank you for your answer. What I meant was the "High Dynamic Range Rendering" / "Standard Range Rendering".
When I updated the game via a patch, this field must be left empty.
On High, it is as we know it from the beginning of the game with lower versions.

Now that I know this, I keep it on Standard. I like it with the stripes. Good to know where it comes from.

Why isnt there a third option? Switching it off would also be very nice to try out.

I always read the patch notes, but I missed this info.

This was the reason that setting was introduced in 1.0.2.2
- IMPORTANT CHANGE: Changed default back buffer format to use Standard Range rendering. This may help some who are experiencing black screens at startup, but it will also reduce the quality of some visuals. If you were not previously having problems with black screens or crashes then you can revert to High Dynamic Range rendering in the in-game Game Settings to restore the visuals to their previous quality.

Yes the effect is ‘colour banding’ to try to make a fluid gradient, but in Standard Rendering mode the gradient seems to loose alpha blending or something similar. Much like the old days where some games had to run on 16-bit colour depth, instead of 32-bit.
It also caused colour banding in gradients.
The circles within the circles do not reflect any form of range in a gameplay sense. Its just a visual artifact.

I remember those old days of 16 and 32 bit colors.
If you were lucky. Most were still on 8 bit.
