TF naming

Post by Gratch1111 »

You can list all task forces and you among other things get their missions. Is there a way to also get the info you have written on the TF. I guess not in that view but maybe another?

The only places the 25 character name you can give to a task force will show is on the map when you mouse over the TF, and in the upper left of the task force display itself. They don't appear in the all TF lists. Probably due to lack of room.

The option to personalize task force names was added in a patch, I believe. So, some aspects of the game's architecture probably weren't designed with them in mind.

You will also find that if the TF has only one ship and you put some info in the TF naming box, it will not show up on the mouseover. I suspect it has something to do with the AI looking at the ship name and displaying that, which it does not do with multi-ship TFs.

Ahhh, yes good point. I observed this on all my single-SS TF's and already wondered what was going on there...

I've found that sometimes I can give a name to a one-sub task force and it will actually display in the map mouse-over. Like this sub TF which is named after the USS Cabrilla's commanding officer. However, it's like a 50/50 proposition. Sometimes it takes, and sometimes it doesn't.

Another question about task forces. Is there a way to number a task force or are you stuck with the task force number the game gives you? Example: I want all my carrier task forces numbered in the four hundreds and all my surface combat numbered in the three hundreds.

No. You can't customize your task force numbers. The game engine just assigns the lowest unused number to any new task force.

But you can manipulate your TFs so that the lowest available number is filled with the ships you want there. Just create the a new TF at a base that already has several TFs in it (use a placeholder ship that can be transferred out later if you don't want it). If the new TF is the lowest number, transfer all the ships you want in there. If one of the existing TFs has a lower number, but is of a different type, make them both "Escort" TFs and transfer ships between them, then change the TF types to the appropriate ones.

Thanks.
That's what I thought. I was planning to do that but I was wondering if there was another way. It took me a play through before I figured out about the "Escort" trick. It really ticked me off having to spend PP's to re-assign commanders like Adm Halsey to task forces.

And/or simply create a new TF where the old low numbered TF is, transferring all the ships to it. Does require resetting all the TF commands and you will loose the TF leader. Next step is to create the new TF which will now use the free TF number.

Don't forget, never transfer out all ships or disband a TF if you want the leader and and the TF nymber to remain.
