Just Bought, Downloaded & Installed.

Just Bought, Downloaded & Installed.

Post by rkr1958 »

I was looking at this game over the weekend; especially since it was on sale and decided I was going to buy it on Monday (9/5/2022) morning. However; when I went to purchase I saw the sale was no longer in effect. I guess I got caught by the international date line and all that; so I decided NOT to buy at that time.

So back to the forum today and I was reading through one of the AARs and was impressed by the island invasion, sea and air combat. I've been looking for a game less detailed that WITPAE; but more detailed than WIF wrt/DDs, convoys, sub warfare and of course surface & carrier air warfare in general. Especially in the Pacific. I just finished the read of, "Tin Cat Titans" which is the story of US Destroyer Squadron 21, which held the line against the IJN in the Solomons in 1942 & 1943 and served with distinction including supporting the US invasions of the Philippines, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. In fact Halsey's flagship the BB Missouri was led into Toyoko bay by 3 veterans of Desron 21 right after the surrender of Japan.

Well, I was debating whether or not to bite the bullet and buy at the regular price or wait when I remembered that I have 4 or 5 anniversary coupons from Slitherine/Matrix that I haven't even used. Thought I'd give the latest coupon code a try and it was still good for 50% off, so I went ahead and bought!

I know I've got some climbing up the learning curve to do. I looking, hoping, for a gaming experience that reflects the WW2 Pacific air. sea and land war at the theater (i.e., Nimitz's and MacArthur's level) down to the task force, army group, island garrison level. I guess now is the time to dig in and see ...

Hi Ronnie,

I'd be happy to give you a game. I've been dabbling with this but not that experienced. Could try a mirror game. Let me know if you are interested.

I'm definitely interested. I was thinking we could start off with a small scenario (mirror games) and then advance to the full scenario (mirror games) once I gain some level of competency.

Suggestion...

Play a few games with just playing 6 to 10 turns...and restart.

The Japanese start is huge...
The Allies can recover from a few mistakes...Japan can not.

One thing I did often was just play turn 1 over and over as the Japanese testing...

Thanks. I'm trying to figure out things playing the Solomons scenario as the allies vs the computer. I've restarted 3 or 4 times already and haven't got a good feel yet for things.

the Solomons is a "special" scenario...

You can work the basics but might be better to play the Japanese for turn 1 or 2 and do what they did historically...that way you can get a better feel.

Just a suggestion.

Same here, i dont buy it from the Matrix store though, so been waiting for a sale on Steam to grab this one. I do however like complex games esp that monster WitP:AE. But wasnt sure if i will like this one, wish i could play this as slow pace, like one day at a time. I think this one is weekly or two, forgot how they set it up. Also have Strategic Command: World War II World at War. It look okay, but wasnt happy with the setup.

The way they had WitP:AE after you make your move or turn, then AI or opponent does the same, then comes to execute phase, etc. That something i like to get into, but sadly hardly any games like that out there. Guess i am tired of playing my turn, your turn, etc. Those typical turn based game.

Just noticed that this game has a PBEM++ feature that allows you to save during your turn and reload later so you don't have to finish your turn in one sitting. VERY NICE!

I see you are a wif fan, if you like it you will love wp, it is less in depth then wif but it is actually made to be a computer game so it is very playable unlike wif which was a great board game but imho not well adapted to the computer. imho wpe and wpp are the first GOOD ww2 full strategic level games for the computer, many have tried Alvaro is the first to succeed! Not sure what I did wrong but certainty did something wrong? I saved my turn to the PBEM ++ server before finishing. And then when I downloaded it I was at the beginning. That happened 3 or 4 times. Is it a different download for the start of turn vs one you've saved but not completed during the turn?

It shouldn't do that.

You are in game during PBEM and hitting save correct?

Then when you come back you go on the Multiplayer and load the right game?

Is it turn 1 or turn later on in the game?

I am hitting save and getting a message that my game has been saved to the server. However, when I load it I'm at the start of the turn. The turn is the 2nd allied turn, so turn 4 then.

Just to be sure, you are « at the start of the turn » because you are seeing the Turn Report window, no?
But, are your moves done for the turn correctly saved?

yes. I'm seeing the turn report and no moves were saved. It's as if I downloaded the turn fresh.

This is very odd and the 1st time this is reported.

Do you have security software?

Pull this log and post it here please. it is a text file

C:\Users\"your computer user name"\AppData\LocalLow\Kraken Studios\WarPlan\Player.log

It is either something here or something is off with the game save

And use I am running security software, McAfee w/Windows 11.

P.S. I found it. Rookie mistake, enabled show all files & folders in windows explorer. Will post shortly.

Re: Just Bought, Downloaded & Installed.

Post by rkr1958 »

I'm beginning to suspect that it's on my side. Maybe a Windows 11 security feature? Because, I know for a fact that I finished turn 4 yesterday, uploaded that turn and got confirmation for at least the 3rd time. However; when I go back to the server it's still showing that I need to play turn 4. I do run Warplan with administrator privileges; however my suspicion is that Windows 11 is uploading a file with different privileges.

I know I'm not explaining myself very well but a similar thing happened with MWIF. I upgraded my PC back in April/May to a really nice system. When I ran MWIF the game files in the saved directory did NOT appear to be updating when looking at them with Windows Explorer or 3rd party apps; however when I loaded them back with the game the updates were there. Specifically, if I looked at the game file with a text editor and it appeared as an older turn. My son gave me the solution and that was to run MWIF in admin mode. When I did that the game files I could access through Windows Explorer or 3rd party apps (e.g., Notepad ++) matched the game files I could load through the game. When I didn't run MWIF in admin mode they didn't. It's like Windows 11 was creating mirror, but separate, directories for my game files depending on whether I was running MWIF in admin mode or not.

Could something similar be happening here?
