Running Southern Storm an a MacBook Pro (M1 pro)

Post by JensLeugengroot »

Hi,

if anyone is interested in running Southern Storm on a modern MacBook pro (M1 pro):

Today I installed Southern Storm on above mentioned MacBook via Parallels 17.
You have to get the ARM Version of Windows 11 from the Windows Insider Program (M1 based Macs don't have a Intel Chip anymore and therefore can't run the normal x64 Versions of Windows). BTW Win11 is free via the Insider Program.

And well, what can I say? Southern Storm runs without a single problem in this configuration. I'm delighted ... ;)

Yes, I was part of the beta test team and run on an Intel MacBook Pro with Parallels and W11. After a couple of minor early hiccups it's been working great. Red Storm always did as well.

I would note that you need to make sure that the Parallels environment is set for the highest performance or else the turn replay will be painfully slow. On high performance it runs fantastic.

ultradave, I am running it on Parallels to with no problems. But in game the reactions to cursor interactions feels a bit sluggish. May I ask what the Parallels settings are that you are running?

It's more likely the settings in game if you haven't adjusted them from defaults. Look in preferences when you first start the game. There are settings for mouse hover, map edge sensitivity and so forth. If the game is running fine for you otherwise, I'd play with those settings and see if it helps.

I'm just using a trackpad btw, but these in game settings apply to that as well. During beta testing I tweaked those back and forth until I got something that I was happy with, especially the mouse hover.

You can also adjust the pace/speed of replay and animations there too, if you want to speed up or slow down the turn replay.

For parallels, I have in the Configure settings:

Options/Optimization - No limit (If I'm playing a game using Parallels I'm not doing anything else resource intensive)
Hardware/CPU and Memory - Auto (4CPUs and 4GB RAM)
Hardware/Graphics - Best for Retina Display
Hardware/Mouse and Keyboard - Optimize for games both

I think that's all that would make a difference, but if you have any other questions I'll look them up.

Dave

Thank you for your answer. I really appreciate it. I played around with the settings and the biggest boost I saw was to set Graphics/Resolution to Scaled or Best for External Monitor. I currently set it to Legacy. The graphics did not change and look great is all the sluggishness fell away. I think it had to do with converting with my Retina resolution (3456 × 2234) into Windows numbers. Made a huge difference for other games as well.

Now FCSS is running like it running natively. Awesome. Thanks for pointing me into the right direction.
