How much different do you play?

Post by thewood1 »

Not only was "tiny" a big update, it brought in a number of large features including the MD mission planner, AAM changes, ground units, cargo 2.0, etc. And the changes haven't stopped since with updates to radar modeling, sonar modeling, reference point management, event manager, weather, etc. in more recent updates.

With all of those changes, how have you altered your playing style or approach to the game?

I used to micro manage almost all of my flights and units. Now I am comitted to learning and to using the Mission planners and the automatic flight plans. etc.
I always knew this is how it was designed to be played but never felt it had the tools do so. I feel now, we are getting it... still some tweaks, but most of the major tools are there. It's a whole new game actually.

Though I probably need to spend more time with it, I haven't been able to grasp the mechanics of the Mission Planner. I feel like I need a detailed tutorial along the lines of what Baloogan produced during the early days of Command. I know the Mission Planner is far more realistic but it's tempting to stick with my old methodology.

Sometimes I play tutorials and mission I've already cleared again and try to reduce micro as far as possible with the new features. I check also how new models e.g. missiles and sonar have an impact on already knows situations to get an idea how to deal with it.

I still enjoy doing lots of things manually. Realistic it may not be, but it's fun when you can pull off a well executed strike without all the fancy tools.

That being said, lately I've been challenging myself to try and execute missions as hands off as I can. Just like when I control everything, it's a lot of fun to see all the planning get executed.

Going forward my play style is likely going to depend more on my mood and what scenario I'm playing.

You mean like the MDSP tutorials (included in the game) and the videos P Gatcomb has done?

I haven't changed my playstyle that much yet (aside from having to factor in realistic AAMs).

But I intend on changing that. I've barely touched the Mission/Operations Planner features. Just haven't got around to sitting down to learn them.

However, I finally got around to printing out the revised manual a few days ago, so I hope to sit down and dig into these new features properly. I'll have a couple extra days off work this week so I'll make good use of that time.

This basically how I am approaching CMO post-Tiny.

I didn't buy CMO until after the "Tiny" update. However, in all the other naval games I've played such as Harpoon, Cold Waters, Fleet Command, Global Conflict Blue 2 ...
Yeah. It's taking a bit of getting used to this mission and MDSP oriented "hands off" play style. But I'm digging it and starting to understand. I can see just how powerful it ultimately is when properly used together. It's a complex set of tools, and the interactions between them. Get the relationship with doctrine/WRA wrong and you're not gonna have a good time. LOL. I'm still not really sure how or when to use the Operations Manager, and some things in the ATO and Flight Planner confuse me. Either there's bugs in there or I do things wrong sometimes; I lean toward the latter at this point. ;)
Heck! I would estimate that a good 1/3 to 1/2 of my gameplay is setting up missions and zones and doctrine and WRA and such. I have no problem with that. It's cool making a complex plan and then watching it all unfold. Even if it ends in disaster. (Just remember to save heh heh. EDIT: It's interesting to run a Plan multiple times and see the different outcomes. It illustrates the myriad complexities in CMO.)
I will also say that the units in CMO seem much better with autonomy than AIs in many other such games I've played.
And I mentioned Cold Waters. And even moreso even with Dangerous Waters and other such sub sims. Yeah. This is NOT the game to use for single-unit sort of stuff LOL.

I am a pathologic micro manager..

Cant help it. I only use very basic missions (such as ASW, or support missions for AEW and OECM).

I never use CAP or plan strikes. As for CAP, I like to decide when my aircraft fires its missiles, when does it turn away etc. the same goes for evasion. I like to control that too.

As for strike missions, I am too dumb to figure out how to set up a well organized ground strike that hits each and every target with the right type and amount of ordenance and the planes dont just hit the first available target with everything they got.

So I do everything manually. :?
