Why do A and Y turrets run out of ammo faster than B and X?

Rule the Waves III is a simulation of naval ship design and construction, fleet management and naval warfare from 1890 to 1970. and will place you in the role of 'Grand Admiral' of a navy from the time when steam and iron dominated warship design up to the missile age.

Why do A and Y turrets run out of ammo faster than B and X?

Post by thedoctorking »

I've noticed this very often - the farthest forward and aft turrets tend to run out of ammo much faster than the more central ones. I don't know if this is a bug or a representation of how ammo stowage really worked on these ships, but if I were designing them, I'd make sure that each gun had about the same amount of ammo available to it (in fact, weren't both forward turrets served by the same magazine?).

A and Y guns have, I believe, slightly better angles of fire and seem less likely to jam than B and X turrets, hence they burn through ammunition faster.

All main battery guns start with the same number of rounds available - and unlike secondary and tertiary, that's locked per turret.

It's because you're using quad turrets. Early quads have a big penalty to both ROF and reliability.

Possible in this case, but I've noticed this in other circumstances where both A and B turrets are doubles or even singles.

Just noticed another case where the ship had 4 double turrets and the A was out while B still had 64 rounds. That would be about 1/3 of what they started with.

I will have our NWS internal beta team keep an eye out for this, thanks.

I had this issue in 1.00.34 with a ship with only forward turrets, so a single magazine for both turrets, and A is out of AP while B still has 121 rounds left. Pretty sure the ship did not have any damage that put a turret out of action temporarily. Something is going on here more than just "the A turret gets more chances to shoot than the B".

I've added the save. It's the Italian "Ulpio Traiano" and her sister ship "Giulio Germanico" (which still has a few AP rounds for the A turret but 120 more for B).

Very observant! This does indeed seem to be the case. It probably has to do with rounding effects when ammo expended is deducted from the turrets. I will see if it can be fixed. Thanks!
