Confederate Landings

Post by vonLockwood »

I am new to the game. First time through on default settings won a CS Minor Victory at end of turns. I cleared the Hatteras area and tried to land; first infantry and later marines at many points on the outer banks near Elizabeth City / Fort Hatteras. Never seemed to have the option to "LAND" or "UNLOAD". Anybody?????

Basically, you can't land troops there. In the game the North Carolina outer banks islands are basically sea hex sides with a port between them. Hence all the blue sea supply numbers and no green ones. There are two Union controlled ports at the southwest pass of the Mississippi delta which are similar in that they are isolated ports and can't ever be captured by the Confederacy.

Thanks for the FAST response. So I thought at one point the union landed troops there but I may be mistaken. But once the US takes Hatteras the CS cannot re-capture it?

The Union receives Hatteras by saying yes to decision event 508. At 150 MPPs it's a bargain considering its usefulness at a mid-Atlantic coast refueling point. It also has the effect of cutting off the Elizabeth City blockade runner route and will automatically destroy any Confederate gunboat present in port. At that point it becomes permanent Union territory as there is no way for the Confederate player to retrieve it given its attributes in the game.

Historically, Cape Hatteras was feebly defended by the South and the improvised dirt and turf forts there couldn't stand up to the Union navy's guns. So that's probably why this battle was rendered as a decision event.

Thanks,
I can see the decision based on historic events.
My issue was later in the game I was able to deny the US Navy access to the Hatteras Sound. It was irritating to not be able to take control of that hex.
