Is there a way to adjust carrier air attacks so that they can have increased effects on ground units?

Post by Steely Glint »

Right now three fleet carriers attacking an unentrenched unit have zero net effect. I would like them to occasionally inflict a hit. Is there a way to use the editor to adjust carrier air attacks so that they have increased effects on ground units?

BTW,this is a worthy member of the Strategic Command franchise.

Have you set their mode to bombing?

Yes. Mode set to bombing, max attacks by multiple fleet carriers on a garrison unit with a max entrenchment of two (which is far more likely to be at one), and zero damage done. Carriers are rated 2/2/2.

Is there any way to dial up the damage in the editor?

In the Editor, you'll see attack values for (all) CVs.
Garrison and HQ are type "Soft"
Corps and Army are type "Hard"
Many other other unit types are have a specific type.
Basically, you would increase the attack value against the type of unit, for your CV.
Or, you can potentially decrease the defense value of the specific unit(s), against "Carrier".

With the campaign open in the Editor, go to:

Campaign -> Edit Country Data -> Edit Combat Target Data

Here you can amend the base stats for all unit types, and you can use the Apply Data function to copy a change from one country's units to all others.

You will have to press File -> Save As to give your Mod a new name, as you can write over the official campaigns.

Alternatively, Naval Weaponry research upgrade do increase Carriers' attack values against ground targets by 0.5 per level, so attaining (or in the Editor, giving someone level 2) will also increase their ground attack capabilities.

Be advised that if you do, the CVs in a mass will be devastating.

I had the same initial reaction, but then played the game through to victory. At the end, late 1944, I had 10 US CVs in my group, with 2 CVLs off Okinawa. We're talking 21 airstrikes. And by this point the naval weaponry ratings had added .5 twice to each CV.

It took two turns (40days), but after over 40 strikes the Japanese were toast. They had an army in the town and a corps in Shuri castle.

If you start the carriers out as effective, by the end they'll be OP.

Yeah, the floating Death Star fleet the USN often has by 1945 makes the atomic bomb seem kinda superfluous. :|

One way to think about it would be...

Each CV unit in SC-WitP represents two full-size CVs (ex. Yorktown, Kaga, Shokaku, etc).
That's about 80 aircraft each.

A division is about 12,000 troops.
Each Corps unit is 2, or 3 divisions... 24k - 36k troops.
Each Army unit is 2 or 3 Corps... 50k - 100k troops.

Yes, that's over-simplifying the TOEs. But directionally...

Two full-size CVs, realistically aren't going to do more than disrupt even a division-sized unit.
If you erased a thousand troops, that would be very impressive.
Eliminating even one "step" from a Corps or Army formation (out of 10) would be like wiping out 3k to 10k troops.
That's really far beyond what 2 full-sized CVs (or even 10 CVs at these scales) are really capable of.

Especially if the bulk of those troops are in bunkers, tunnels and caves.
