Stopping Guderians panzers

Post by DavidDailey »

Anti tank units seem more powerful attacking and tremendously more powerful defending against tanks than tanks are. The Russians can field six and the Americans and British combined can field six antitank units. Is building these units and teching them up a way to contain the powerful German tank supremacy, especially in protected defensive positions, or is the juice not worth the squeeze? As a related question, since some of these units will not return when destroyed, what is the rationale for the redded out units that cannot come back once they are eliminated in combat?

the units become red because you have exceeded the unit limit for that type, typically due to events or scripted spawns.

On paper I like building the max anti tanks as Russia or Germany, but in practice I've had mixed performances with them. They really become great at lvl 3 like many other unit techs, that seems a pivotal point. At lvl 0 they can't stop a tank really, and at lvl 1 & 2 only under the right circumstances. They do seem better at defending vs tanks than attacking, at least until lvl 3. Tanks can kill them quite quickly because they are light armor, but usually it's not cost effective since tanks are 250 and generally have more upgrades while the AT is 200.

Attitudes on this board towards AT units have been very polarized over the years. Some value them like gold, others feel they're too niche of a weapon, too expensive for the cost and should be eliminated from the game. A lot depends on the situation and your particular style of play. They seem more at home in SC: War in Europe where there is a larger, more open map for them to find a place to fit in.

Frankly I've always found tactical bombers to be the more useful and flexible weapon against Axis armor, especially if you can hit that armor in a swamp hex (automatic -1 on air and artillery defense).
