I did try to scan through the three pages attentively but may have missed any reference. I believe I have observed instances where combat units in combat mode but with a march destination set that have expended considerable movement points, say 35+ can escape combat near unscathed on a couple of occasions. Imagination? I do occasionally TIPPLE. It suggests to me that combat may be modelling some kind of 'location within the hex'. Game obviously tracks movement expended and direction of movement. I'm no programmer... but 40 miles is a big hex at 1 turn per day. I did see all the discussion about units in reserve mode, and at first this looks like a more obvious getaway unscathed chance, if not committed to action. To me it also begs the question. Is it a 'known' thing that the game is not looking at these parameters for any combat? Perhaps I saw that referenced near the beginning. Everything has already collided between my ears. I know I know I saw that report that said a PT sunk a little lugger with .50cal fire... smiles all around.

I have also noticed that units about to leave a hex are less likely to be attacked during an enemy DA or SA. I have no data on this to cite, just the impression over many games and repeats of that situation.

Well, movement phase is resolved before combat one, so maybe they just escape the hex before the combat. And rather often movement is set in the direction of the future retreat of other units that end up caught by combat and routed

Thanks GA. I know I've seen it where a unit definitely escapes in movement phase. With infantry in jungle, I recently had a Chinese escape with minimal losses having started movement at around 35 in combat mode. On a tangent, the Chinese HQ units seem very persistent. Even when taking crazy 26-1 deliberate or shock attacks they might last 3 days with all infantry long gone after 1st day.

This may be linked to daily movement rates. Accumulate enough miles and an LCU will exceed its daily movement rate in given mode/terrain, and the LCU cannot help in combat as it too far away from the battlefield. This would require testing though.

BTW, the new FINAL manual p.167 doesn't add any new information about the Reserve mode.

Manual, p.167

"If attacked and the initial Assault odds are greater than 2:1 a unit in reserve may be added to the combat if the units Leader passes a LAND check.If the check is successful the unit’s Op Mode to will change to Move and the reserve unit’s combat strength will be added to the combat"

Let's say a unit in Reserve is comitted to battle. Now, does the Reserve unit participate in the fire phase of combat OR does its simply add its AV to adjusted AV resolution after the fire phase? Since the Reserve unit walks to sound of the guns, that would mean that the unit should, in my understanding, arrive after the fire phase to plug any gap that forms in buckling defence.

The manual seems vague to me with its "added to the combat" thing.

Looking at fatigue and disruption after a battle shows that not all units attacking or defending are engaged equally. So I think that means there are die rolls to determine the degree of engagement of each unit, and that would apply to the unit coming out of reserve mode into move mode too. That is why it would be vague about when or if it engages. That seems realistic in a 46 mile wide hex - you need to be at the right place at the right time to take part in the battles. And a cowardly leader can flee without engaging or being engaged at all!
