Carrier Aircraft Replenishment from CVE

Post by Bella »

Playing Allied in August 1942, the second of the CVEs have arrived on the West Coast, with 24 F4Fs and 24 SBDs. I want to use these to reinforce my carrier groups.

Do I set the TF to Replenishment?

You do not have to do so.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.

... although it's wise to do so. They just need to be withing air transfer range. A full replenishment CVE (200%) will not protect itself. E.g no CAP and no other missions only transfers. Once cap falls to 115% then all missions become available.

These air units were not meant for combat. IRL CVEs were used as sources or replacement aircraft but from what I can gather these aircraft were not in organised air units, just aircraft crammed onto a CVE? (If you know different...). The game uses the VRF units in this way to make in work.

The VR squadrons will also work from land bases. But they were "designed" to provide replacements far from land bases, then the CVEs would return and load more aircraft for a repeat performance. These squadrons will also provide pilots so they also need to be trained enough for combat purposes.

In '45 with fleet oilers, ammunition replenishment ships and CVEs with replenishment squadrons in Replenishment TFs the American Navy can engage is sustained "at sea" operations for significant durations.

RangerJoe and HansBolter have it right. In 1945 you have it perfectly setup for a steamroller offensive....GP
