VP FUBAR......

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

VP FUBAR......

Post by HansBolter »

So after suffering over 900 plane losses I reran the turn with the strategic bombers standing down.

With only tactical bombers flying I suffered 570 plane losses.

I stood down the tactical bombers flying only Naval Patrols, Superiority and Tactical Recon missions.

Plane losses plummeted to 75.

After the following German turn I was awarded 6 VPs for Bombing.

So, if I'm gaining the same 6 VPs per turn when NOT bombing that I get when bombing, what is the point of losing all those planes?

The VP algorithm is obviously FUBAR if its awarding VPs for bombing when no bombing is taking place.

One really has to wonder about the competence of the people who designed this game.

Its very much possible the bombing VP relates to existing industry damge in germany, not what you currently made via bombing.

One really wonders why you're still playing the game.

"Its very much possible the bombing VP relates to existing industry damge in germany, not what you currently made via bombing."

And if that is the case, it doesn't cast any better light on the designers, since they have presented it to the player as VPs earned that turn.

In order to continue to uncover and shed light on the flaws, of course.

Especially for the benefit of the ignorant, who are incapable of even seeing the flaws.

I remember one previous GG game, Bombing the Reich, had similar VP design. Points awarded fur current industry damage level and penalty points if damage is below required level.

So for the past three turns I have rested my bombers, flying only Ground Support.

My Bombing Victory Points have steadily climbed each turn from 6 to 9 to 15......all WITHOUT doing any bombing!!!!!!

It couldn't be more apparent that 2by3 passed its expiration date long before this turd was published.

one assumes you haven't read the manual or the rules then?

you get bombing vps for damaged factories - the type and what counts where are all in the manual and indeed discussed at length in the better AARs

so yes, no bomb but still get VP for the existing damage. The speed at which damage is repaired is variable to the target type and set out in the manual, I doubt the AI is managing its construction assets as a player does so you be able to do a good guess

as to other whinges, the axis doesn't get VP for U-boats if the factory has any damage, the axis don't get VP for v-weapons before 1944, if you hold all the launch sites then there are no more VP awarded to the axis

'other' losses in the vp chart are again set out in the manual - and indeed in many an AAR

Once again, simply not anywhere near an acceptable explanation.

If damage is being repaired at all, then standing down bombers would result in a DROP in VPs as damage is repaired, NOT an increase in VPs.

After standing down my bombers altogether, I experienced a steady INCREASE in VPs per turn.

If the VP increase was resulting due to my physically occupying, and presumably destroying the factories, then presenting the VPs as having been gained by Bombing is simply deceitful.

Present the accruing of VPs as a result of per turn operations when in fact is residual over multiple turns is again, deceitful.

What part of that is too complicated for you?

In the GC, you earn VPs PER TURN based on overall existing damage to German strategic targets - in effect a relative measurement of the degradation of the German economy this week. This accumulates to a TOTAL score over the campaign.

You earn those VPs regardless of whether you inflicted the damage this turn, last turn, etc - all that matters is how badly the Germans are hurt right now. You might think of it as not "did I hit a target this turn", but "how many weeks of the campaign did the german war economy spend light/moderate/heavily damaged"

The idea being that to get to game winning VP you need to accumulate a steady, lethal damage to German industry over time. Usually you want double digit weeks in '43.

Similarly you lose points every turn a U-Boat/V-Weapon site is fully operational, regardless of it being operational because of poor intelligence, raid failure, rapid repairs, or simply opting not to hit it. It doesn't matter - its a measure of how much you let through the cracks, one way or another.

As to "why didn't the death ride of the 570 do anything"...my guess would be that the answer is in the question. In amidst the horrible slaughter (and presumably unrested bombers), you probably didn't hit much. So the overall damage level to the economy...stayed where it was.
