Look before you rebase aircraft

Post by mdsmall »

Don't try this at home: playing Allies in my current PBEM match, I sent a Marine Corps fighter unit to the Darwin area to help out the Australian attack on Timor. However, I did not look carefully at the map first and landed the fighter on Bathurst Island, next to the Australian HQ in Darwin. Except that there is no land connection between Bathurst Island and the Australian mainland. So the fighters went to zero supply the next turn and with only one movement point, they can't get off the island, so they will slowly die of attrition. The only thing I can think of doing is to amphibiously transport a HQ there which would generate enough supply for the fighters to move out, but then the HQ would be stuck there for the rest of the game, and that would be more costly than just buying a new fighter unit. If someone has another rescue plan, I'd be glad to hear it.

Lesson learned: just because an aircraft unit can rebase to a hex does not mean that it will be in supply if you move there.

Thanks Michael, and this is certainly unintended, so I will amend the map so that it won't be possible in future.

Look before you leap is good advice. There are a lot of "dead zones" of nil supply on the map in places like the interior of Australia, New Guinea, North America, Siberia, etc. Normally an air unit placed in such a bad supply spot can move one land hex per turn towards better supply, but not across sea hexes apparently. There are some islands in the Solomons chain like New Georgia that have the same issue. You can rebase to it, but you can't fly off again and any air unit there dies a slow death. (Seems odd since New Georgia was the site of an airfield eventually). You don't have the option to disband either.

Interesting scenario! It highlights the importance of checking logistics before rebasing in strategy games. Bathurst Island’s lack of a land connection makes supply management tricky. Instead of sacrificing an HQ, could you use sea transport or airlift to resupply the fighters? If neither works, rebuilding the unit might indeed be the most practical option. Research papers require a lot of effort and time, and I was struggling to meet my deadlines. That’s when I decided to try https://academized.com/order-research-paper and The entire process was seamless, and the paper I received was beyond my expectations. It was well-researched, properly formatted, and delivered on time. Their writers clearly understand academic standards, and I felt confident submitting the work. I highly recommend their service for students who need quality research papers.
