AAR - Mega Pacific MRY v2.3; Nginear vs Defier

Post by Nginear »

I'm pretty excited for this. Some background info: I am the designer of Pacific MRY, as well as a mod for SC: WaW - Guadalcanal 1:1 ship scale. I've spent waaaay more time designing mods than actual play time :D
But this will be my first recorded AAR! I felt my mod has gotten to a decent playable level and so I put an open invite out there. I think this will be a great way to raise awareness of the mod, as well as keeping notes for myself for future improvements. I have spent hundreds of hours researching and designing this mod and have made it with one goal in mind - to be the most realistic yet. You can download it here and read all my design notes:
https://www.matrixgames.com/forums/view ... 7&t=408207

I will be playing Allies and Defier will be Japan. I know nothing about Defier or his/her experience level as he has no online presence in the forums. Should be interesting!

Here we go!

Defier Turn 1:
A 6.5 minute replay! Japan has lots of work to do that first turn.
-KB concentrated on the battleships, sinking 5 of them (historic was 4 and others damaged). He did not attack the aircraft.
-Philippines: Defier landed in north Luzon capturing Aparri. He swarmed my sub fleet with destroyers and sunk CA Houston. Thankfully, he left the B-17s alone. 2 units landed near Davoe.
-Guam unit is eliminated, Wake unit holds but has 1 HP left. I guess that is fairly historical!
-Brunei bows to the rising Sun, Sarawak unit killed but he is unable to capture.
-Malaya invaded north of Singapore. Repulse, Prince of Wales, and the escorting destroyers sunk (no surprise).
-Changsha: Defier kills the Corp and captures the fortress guarding Changsha. Ouch.

Japan income: 374

Nginear Turn 2

Since my options are obviously limited, here are my main goals for the first few turns:
1) Delay delay delay
2) Get eyes on the perimeter
3) Hold the Alternate capital of DEI as long as possible.
4) Get as much money to China before the convoy is shut down
5) Defend Rabaul
6) Harass stragglers of Kido Butai.

I designed KB to have enough supply to attack once and cruise to safer waters once, after that it has 5 supply and unable to cruise. Of course the player could go a safer route and only use 1 strike from each of the carriers and use the APs to move further away (which would actually be a bit more historical based on my testing), but I leave that up to the aggression of the player. In this case, Defier used a couple of surface ships and subs to attack my BBs, as well as both strikes from each carrier.

My riposte:
It is a fair amount of pressure working the turn! I have already thought of several things to improve from here.
The area around Pearl Harbor is...crowded. I sank the midget sub, and heavily damaged a second sub. I tried sending the CV Lexington south to regroup, but it ran into a scout force CL and CA. I managed to bring the CL down to 1 HP. Scouted half of KB with the seaplanes (prolly should have done that sooner!). My harass strategy comes into play here: if I attack any of his ships, then he loses the supply point and won't be able to cruise if attacked last turn. Next turn Defier will be in the predicament of: attacking an open target, or cruising away to safer waters to resupply. If he sticks around to attack, the ship will be unable to cruise next turn. Cruising will get him close to a port and under the protection of his LBA.
Just to be bold and put the dilemma in full view, I attacked a CV with a cruiser and it killed one aircraft. Ordinarily that would certainly not be worth it, but since he is in retreat mode and any hits on KB brings down the experience level of the CV's planes, hopefully I retreated it far away enough to get a "free" hit.
Since ports are scarce, carriers are pretty limited in offense with only 8 supply. It is far better to send them back to home waters for 12 supply before a major offensive.

Malaya:
I took the bold move and pulled my Corp guarding the capital to take the hit on the exposed HQ. Honestly, it will probably get clobbered by LBA next turn whether it stayed put or not.

Philippines: I used up most of the USA starting income to operate the B-17's to Oz. Tried to get my subs free in hidden mode, but most were spotted.

DEI: As previously stated, I'm going to try to set up a "last stand" around Soerbaja since it is further away. My goal is to move the HQ and concentrate the LBA over there. I used DEI's meager income to begin reinforcing that unit in Seorbaja.

Oz: I am going to put the partisans in DEI. This should tie down some units once DEI falls.

Britain: Reinforced Hong Kong since the unit survived (attacking with LBA is helpful to capture as Japan).

Wake: Opted to attack with the naval guns instead of reinforce (didn't have much $ left after operating the B17s). 3 shots and no damage. Booger.

Greetings to everyone and to Nginear in particular. I'm a guy from Brazil. It was a pleasant surprise to discover that he is the author of this mod and that he is willing to narrate our conflict week by week. This should make a good story and encourage new players. Good luck! Tora, tora, tora!

Well that was some good news and bad news for me that turn. The good news is, I got some good results on "how well the ships play in the sandbox" - or rather sink in the sandbox. The bad news is, it was all my ships.

Turn 3:
The opening pounding continues.
At least 5 DDs continue to surround my sub fleet around the Philippines. Japanese tanks move next to the capital but eye from a distance.
My turn: Just trying to break the subs out. It is difficult with no air cover. They are taking a serious drudging. M

Malaya: my move to the south with my Corp continues to contain him. He bombs the capital, which probably would have hurt my Corp had I left it there.
My turn: Reinforced. Just trying to delay the inevitable. I'm not sure where he is sending all the units in Thailand. He will need reinforcements in Malaya.

DEI: a Japanese CA is spotted snooping ports in the north, but no deep inside DEI territory.
My turn: Last turn I moved the bomber to an airfield on the Borneo, within range of Sarawak. Launched a strike on the port of Sarawak, hoping to shut it down. Instead it found, and attacked, the SF amphibious group causing 3 damage. I'll take it. I think a bomber only attacks the port if there are no units in the port?

Hong Kong: continues to withstand repeated attacks by the Corp and Regiment. He sinks the British destroyer squadron (expected).
My turn: reinforced back to full. I moved the Corp outside Canton to attack the Regiment, and back to Canton. No damage, but the regiment suffered readiness loss.

Sarawak, Wake, Guam: all fall.

Rabaul: It is guarded with a garrison and Battalion.

China: He is starting to focus attacks on Nanyang. One front line regiment is reduced to 1 HP. Nanyang on its own is not of much importance, but it does provide secondary railroad access to Wuhan if captured. Chinese troops border most of the railroad on the southern Japanese front, so one little opening and the railroad could be cut.
However, if he gets to close then it will start to activate Communist China.
My turn: I move the weakened Corp up north to cut off the City of Bogsau. It is a small city near Communist China with no railroad access. It's more an opportunity target than anything, but it would open a road to Datong. I moved that 1 HP away, hopefully he does not hunt it down with airpower.

Communist China: Mao is concerned about the proximity and mobilizes slightly. I opted to take the units in the communist bases, which may cause some headaches for him.

Kido Butai: I think it actually got larger, lol. It looks like he sent the ships from Wake over.
He decided not to cruise any of the ships away, except for the seriously damaged CL. Of course he attacked Lexington, which was stuck next to his ships. Damage was catastrophic, 4 and 6 hull damage on hits. Yikes (but on par with attacks on the BBs with CV on bomber mode). He then poked around on a DD, which Enterprise intercepted an attack, and Enterprise was promptly sunk near Hawaii. It was then free reign on the rest of the ships with no air cover.
Total losses that turn from KB: CVx2, DDx2, CAx2
The moral of the story if playing Allies: RUN AWAY on the first turn lol. Do not engage anything! I'm not ready to say this is imbalanced, but the logic has dawned on me that the Japanese navy can stick around for another strike, and even though unable to cruise, will still not have any serious threat - but I am making a note.
My turn: well I decided to poke the bear. I sunk one sub and then sent some CAs and a BB to attack one of his CVs...before I knew everything was still there. Managed to get one CV down 8 HP and 7 aircraft. Then sent a CL to scout the area (they have 4 visibility). It ran into a IJN Battleship and was immediately sunk (the CL only had 7 HP). Thankfully the floatplane was already launched, though the pilot is now a POW.
In the end, I was able to sink a Battleship and one sub...however I am strongly concerned the rest of my fleet will be sunk. He could launch more airstrikes (which would put his carrier supply at around 4) with impunity at this point. I am going to make a note about the ship vs carrier attack stats, I'm feeling it is a little low. I'm trying to keep Carriers King, not battleships running up and gunning down a carrier, but it does need to be a deterrant.

So the plus side, I have some good game notes on early game naval combat. Another plus is he will take several turns (4-5) to get his carriers back to Japan for full repairs.
On the negative side, losing two CVs with only a couple of fighters lost is a huge set back. I still have two carriers Stateside, but I have to be very judicious about engaging with only two. It will be a long time before it becomes 6:6.

Tech: nothing new invested (only what is done at start of game).

Australia: 141
China: 103
USSR: 37
DEI: 11

Convoys: Still sending maximum amount to China.

I spent USA and Australia MPPs to rebuild ships and move some troops around. US starts with a lot of obsolete stuff. China repurchased the Corp and reinforced where it could. Malaya purchased a garrison, hopefully it is around long enough to get it placed.

Re: AAR - Mega Pacific MRY v2.3; Nginear vs Defier

The good news is I started seeing some isolated victories. Some Allied individual units are putting up tough fights, particular the Flying Tigers. The bad news is my prediction was true about losing most of the rest of my US Pacific fleet.

Designer note: I am going to buff Large Naval Guns and slight increase to Coastal Battery. Their results are underwhelming for what they were, or as a deterrent.

His Turn 5:
Open Ocean:
He has kept most KB around for way longer than I ever imagined. Looking back, again, I suppose there is little reason to NOT stick around and attack anything it can find, though it will put a hamper (I hope anyway) on using the carriers in future land operations since it will take several turns to move them. Deifer sinks most of the ships that were used to sink his sub and fast battleship last turn. Further losses: Pre-BBx3, Auxillary x1, DD x2.
And I will recognize his gentlemanly in-game note: "Huge naval losses. Pearl Harbor X2. Carriers reinforced with more ships." I guess that was my hint to stop hunting the carriers ;)
My turn: Run away, brave Sir Robin! Run run, run awaaaaaaaay.

Philippines:
Davao garrison is attacked by two units but holds. Light tanks and medium tanks take up positions outside Manila. The sub hunting continues, he manages to sink 2/5.
My turn: Reinforce Davao. He needs to capture Manila and Davao to Ph to capitulate. He made the mistake of not attacking Davao on the first turn with both units, instead focusing on capturing the city to the north.

Malaya:
Out of all the land combat this last turn, this was the only true negative. He bombs my Corp to pieces, then finishes it off. Malaya will fall next turn and I'm out the cost of a garrison.

Guadalcanal:
It's a race! At start of game, there is a battalion near Tarawa loaded on an amphib. You can land this where ever you want (there are multiple targets each with advantages/disadvantages). Defier decided to make the long haul to Guadalcanal with it. It landed on Guad and captures both airfields.
My turn: Using a sea plane, a sub is found in Guad's port. Launched the B17s vs the port to remind him it is not a safe space. To help with the defense of Rabaul/Port Moseby, a medium bomber and additional sea plane are operated, both were sitting in the US. A medium and strategic bomber are now within range of hitting Guad which might allow me to bomb to death his battalion on the island. However, unless I pluck a fighter on a random island, there will be no fighter escorts.

China:
This was a bit more of a bright spot than usual. Defier ran 4 ground and 2 air attacks on Nanyang and it surprisingly held, but is down to 2 HP. Across the center, I only took slightly more ground losses than him, including one 3:2 exchange. The real beauty was when he ran a scouting mission with the fighters and the Flying Tigers intercepted it. 0:3 damage! Woo hoo! I need any success I can get right now.
My turn: I sent the Flying Tigers on a revenge strafing mission of the dive bomber's airfield. They are intercepted (expected). After two attacks I lose two damage, for 6 damage between both his planes. Overall, 2:9 damage - three cheers for the volunteers!
If I were him, I would swap-operate the near dead unit with a unit from Manchuria.
I'm going all in on Datong. Since it is now openly supplied, I fully reinforced it. That was expensive, but things are heating up around there (see pic). Since it is NM location and a fortress, Defier is going to have to fight for it.
As is typical with my aggressive style, I decided to probe weak spots just to be a pain. I move a Corp to the southern rail line, protected by a lonely engineer. 0:1 damage. That ought to cause some scrambling next turn - engineers are very weak units without upgrades!
On the extreme southern front, I move another Corp south to cut the connection between Canton and Pakhoi...just to make a faint towards attacking the artillery next turn, or make him transport a unit to protect Pakhoi.

Communist China:
With the attacks on Nanyang and closing in on Datong, Communist China fully mobilizes for war. The Japanese have broken the unspoken truce! It will be nice to have these four units available.

DEI:
My turn:
His light cruiser bumps into the relatively capable DEI sub guarding Singapore. Between that and the prepared attack, that is -5 HP on the CL. However, he swarms the area with destroyers - one of which is parked within range of the Singapore Fortress!
My turn: Yay I get to shoot something! With an attack of 2, it only caused 2 damage from 3 shots.
Boogers.
How disappointing for such a well equipped naval fortress. That's getting buffed next update (probably to a 5 since the large naval guns were usually retired battleship guns).
My medium bomber again causes havoc on Sarawak, shutting down the convoy port. That will be noticeable next turn, plus it traps a division or corp he has there.

Burma:
No action here. Continuing to build as much defense as I can...however I do notice he is building the Burma Railroad (see pic)

Income:
Japan: 409. He is still at a critical junction for MPPs. Until he gets DEI, 400mpps will not sustain the war machine very long.
USA: 617
Britain: 134
British Raj: 145
Australia: 141
China: 103
USSR: 44
DEI: 11
Communist China: 26

Tech:
I force myself to have USA put one chit in Aerial Warfare.

New Losses:
Subs: 2
Destroyers:2
Corp: 1
Pre-war Battleship: 3
Auxiliary Ship: 1

Turn 7/8, Feb XX, 1942

Malaya falls. I lose the pending garrison. His troops begin the march to Singapore.

Philippines: Another sub is lost in the surrounding sea, unable to escape. The ring tightens on the capital, but no attacks so far. Davao garrison is attacked twice, but holds for another round.
My turn:The capital defenders attacks a weakened paratroop unit causing 1 damage and forcing them to retreat. I suspect massive airpower will follow next turn. I am not able to fully reinforce Davao. I'm guessing he will use the CVLs next turn since there is less sub hunting to do.
Two submarines of the original 5 or 6 are close to escaping.

DEI:
My turn:Just like history, the DEI submarines are the only things sinking anything. One sub is attacked, while ultimately losing 4 HP, it dishes out 2 damage and escapes. The second sub puts a fish into a passing destroyer, causing 4 damage on an already damaged ship (3 HP left). Not bad.
My bomber tries to bomb Sarawak, but it is raining and the port takes no damage on two bombing runs. It is intercepted once, but does manage to shoot down 1 fighter with no losses. I would rather keep the port shut down for more damage, but I'll take the consolation prize. These obsolete bombers are doing well overall!

Midway: A big ouch. At start of game, Midway has a DB squadron and a seaplane. I have not been able to move them or replace them. Defier's passing carriers obliterate both of them. His carrier's cannot possibly have more than 3 or 4 supply left. My seaplane had full visibility of the whole sea area. 5 carriers made an appearance, 10 attacks losing only 2 planes in the process. He leaves a blockade of a CA and CL on the port (see pic).
Designer note: It's tricky to decide what to put here at start, there was such a variety of units packed into a small area.

Hong Kong: The artillery softens them up and the valiant defenders surrender after one attack. They hung on for almost two months.

China: As suspected, Datong becomes the next target (see pic). Troops move in, but winter gives Datong a break and there are no attacks.
My turn:Both Corps have 0:1 odds against the cavalry and regiment. The northern corp attacks and gets 0:1. Datong attacks the stronger Japanese Corp to the west, 0:0 but it does weaken the morale/readiness. Communist China moves next to the regiment to put pressure on that City.
Southern Coast: That Corp I moved south is bombed and shelled. It loses 4 HP. Ouch.
Middle: Nanyang falls. A Corp in a fort takes -3 HP from the DBs. He's either going to go the Communist base or push west.
My turn:I move my only reserve division south. The Flying Tigers are moved further west to link up with the AMMC HQ. Hopefully that will be a whammy. The cavalry unit starts to head south. So much to cover....
My turn:The only real army group I'm able to gather is around Xi'an. I start funneling it east towards a weakened Jap division. I need to make it threatening to pull his units, but can't afford to be hit by those dive bombers.

Communist China: My turn:Fully at war now, with all of their partisan glory. At the end of my turn, both partisan supply scripts fire (same conditions as Pacific). It causes widespread damage around both North and South Bases.
Designer Note: Not sure why no China corruption scripts have fired. At this point, it would be very devastating. China relies on convoys for over half its income; even with ~250 mpp it is getting no where near secure. I will have to look at those...

Burma: First airstrikes begin on Burma. Moulmein and Rangoon defenders both take some damage. I had moved Calcutta's AA unit by transport to Rangoon, and I think it scared him away from attacking the capital more than once. Moumein did take a pounding. Defier continues to build the railroad closer to Moulmein.
My turn:Operated the Oz fighter into Burma. No airfields for it though, so it will only get one intercept. I send the Medium Bomber against Thailand's port. It is intercepted and loses 5 planes. Prolly send that guy up to Akyab and the fighter to the Rangoon's airfield next turn. Also operated the HQ closer to try to get support for the area. As backup, I'm moving a regiment from India through the mountains toward Mandalaya for (when) Burma falls.

Partisans: My turn: Not sure what is going on here. I landed a partisan inside Dutch Borneo, and I cannot move it. I landed the second unit on the Malayan peninsular to cut the railline, but I cannot move it either. Are partisan units only able to move in within their home countries???

USA: Continue to build and gather the fleet. With only two carriers, I can't exactly do a whole a lot unless I know where Defier's are. I haven't decided on a next mission - losing 2 carriers and all battleships really limits the options.

Great Britain: the mostly dead fleet arrives in Britain. This is a designer balance. Many British ships made an appearance for a couple of months, got spanked, and Britain withdrew most of the ships after a few months, or sent them into hiding in the west Pacific. It's hard to portray this with the game engine. But there are several capital ships now if I can scrape the MPPs.

Guadalcanal: My turn:I hunt a sub he has poking around. A CL gets snagged by it, -4. I've got all thee "good" points reinforced at this point, albeit with smaller sized units.

At the end of turn, since Comm China is at war, the partisan supply scripts fired around both bases. Not sure how much it took off each city, but it was a lot of explosions.
Come to think of it, I have not had any "Chinese army suffers from Corruption" strength scripts. I'll have to look into that...

Turns 9-10. Late Feb '42.
Midway:
Last turn, Defier wiped out the aircraft at Midway and blockaded the port. I tell you, if you want to keep Midway you have to prepare for that at the beginning of the game. There is a regiment in Seattle and half a marine unit that could be sent there, but then you pay the operating costs to get the aircraft out. Honestly, IRL I'm not sure what was garrisoned there, but holding it is difficult.
The beginning of the replay had him landing a SNLF and capturing the now empty island. If he puts bombers there, Hawaii will start to see supply hits.

Philippines: Davao and Manila fall. SNLF and a CVL finishes off Davao defenders. 4 bombing runs, 1 army, and 2 hits against tanks was enough to finish off the Manila army, while only dishing out -1 damage to the tank. The American Corp is still barricaded, but won't be able to resist much. The whole neither unit had favorable odds of attack.
My turn:
At start, there are 5 sub units near Manila. Historically, out of 30 subs only 1 was sunk while escaping. Such is not the case here! I managed to only get 2 units out to sea, and both very damaged. He spotted one and sent some H6Ks on it. Thankfully, I scouted a path and discovered several DDs waiting for it. I -think- both subs are in safer-ish waters now.
Designer Note: next version will have the subs spread out in the Philippines instead of bunched up at Manila. It will make it harder to box them in with ZoC.

Burma:
Defier is trying to soften up the regiment at Moulmein. I think he was surprised the fighters appeared, but it was 0:2 against his escorts. Bugger. The Burma railroad is finished and he moves a light tank up the Kawkareik Pass. Moulmein regiment knocked down to 3 hp.
My turn: Reinforced Moulmein. If Burma falls, the help available to China becomes very unfavorable convoy wise. I upgraded the radar on the AA (+1 range), so it will now cover Moulmein and Rangoon. Retreated the beat up Md bombers and moved the fighters to the airfield. Hopefully AA+FF+airfield gets some damage in there. I still sure could use another ground unit... On the plus side, his tank was at 0 supply so I know there was no HQ near there.

China:
He presses hard into the Southern CC base. 2 DB attacks + light tank does not do any damage. The fortification on the north side of the Yangtze river falls under artillery and Corp+Division attack. 3 damage to my Corp, and sadly no return damage. There is still a sizeable force around Hong Kong that he shuffled around, so I pulled a weapons upgrade on a Corp down there. It is expensive to do that by design. Updated weapons were scare in China. Also moved the only Divisional reserve down there for support. Datong: Quite a battle. Coastal artillery barrage (I think he brought in the unit from Truk, which indicates he is serious about China) plus attacks from six units finally wiped them out the defenders. I lost the Corp, but they did dish out 4 damage to the units, so it wasn't a free victory.
I gathered a bit of an army near Lanzhou (I think), where he only has one weak 5hp division with no back up. This should at least divert MPPs and maybe divert some units. It's all about delay tactics since China has no real offensive capability at this point.
My Turn:
Flying Tigers are reinforced back to full and link up with their HQ. Hopefully that packs a punch again. AMMC gets a medium bomber from script. I had upgraded the FF in the USA, and I really debated on where to operate it. Burma, China via AMMC, or Rabaul. Not seeing much activity around the Solomons, so I decided to pair it with the Med Bomber in AMMC. It is close enough to Burma I can still hop it over there too. But I'm hoping to soften up some areas in China. It's really hard to build new units.
Since Datong fell, I moved that army into an empty town. I didn't realize it till this turn, but I cannot reinforce the CC army that is not inside it's own boundaries. China is supply only cooperative to CC.

DEI:
Our heroic Med Bomber group bombing the convoy again. 1:1 trade with the fighters. No damage on the port.
He was snooping a sub around in Java and I knew it was there. I used the fighters and one strike from the bombers to find it, and no luck... move the DEI CL in the area and splat! -3 in the area I searched. That pretty much puts the CL out of use. Grrr. On the plus side, he has taken so long on a ground attack that I have almost fully reinforced both capital guardians.

Singapore:
Bombed, no damage. No way to get fighters close enough to intercept off an airfield.

USA:
Reinforced both heavy bomber groups to full. A third unit languishes with 3hp near Seattle. I thinking of getting one to China next turn, but we'll see what next turn holds. Continue to rebuild the fleet.

Scripts:
Except the China corruption script, they seem to be working so far. Arthur appeared, Stillwell went to China, subs appeared in Perth. The North Communist base fired again, causing supply havoc. USA gets another mobilization bump (yay!)

Philippines: Garrison + Corp

Great AAR so far. Also good to see that play-testing this version in MP is helping you fine tune some things for a later version.
Regarding the question about Partisan units. Yes they can only move in their home countries, at least in other SC scenarios. (This is regarding the partisan units that you transported to Borneo a ways back if I remember correctly)
Can't wait to read more.

Thanks for that clarification. That kinda blows apart my plans on how to use them in the mod. That area of the Pacific is so fragmented on ownership, I'm going to have that problem no matter what nationality I use

Turn 11/12 Early/mid March '42.

Communist China:
All but one of the Communist villages have been taken over. He will need to hold troops there for garrisons. The Southern Comm Base is holding up surprisingly well. It has no weapons upgrades, but it took no damage and dished out -1 on the light tanks that attacked it. Meanwhile the Northern Comm Base is fully upgraded and ready to rumble.... My main army attacked Tauiyan, supposed to be 0:1 but turned into a rout 2:0. That sucks. They retreated.

China:
Lost two Corp trying to defend Datong. That is going to leave the northern Communist flank open. Hopefully the continued partisan affect of the Northern Comm base continues to create supply problems.
Middle section was a bit more successful against Luoyang, giving -2 damage to the Division. It at least is sucking MPPs.
Southern Front: He has build up at least 6 units near Hong Kong, including a fighter and artillery. Something is in the works. At attack on my unit yielded an exchange of 2:2.
My turn: I'm putting a lot of air power down there. I'm anticipating him turning his bombers loose soon, which heretofore have been focused on the Philippines. So I have the Flying Tigers linked up with their HQ, a USA fighter flown in, a recently arrived Medium Bomber group to AMMC, and I operated in my best B-24s this turn. I am in the process of moving them to the airfields for best effect. The Flying Tigers strafed the Canton Airfield, I think doing 2:2 damage to the fighter unit there.

Designer Note: So far, I'm pleased with how China is playing. Not too many units, and not too few. I think Defier fell into the trap of concentrating on it too early, you cannot fight China with the Burma road still open (Japan's ~450+ vs China 250 mpp, the math just won't work). If Burma is captured, the airlift is a rough 2mpp given vs 1: mpp received.

Burma: Moulmein continues to get pounded. The AA did not destroy any bombers that I could tell.
My Turn: Went ahead and operated the Regiment from Mandalaya next to Moulmein. It is going to need relief, or block the advance. A group of Fighters was delivered to British Raj, but it will need some upgrades to be effective. You need lots of fighters and close airfields in this mod!

Australia: Just chasing a sub around in the Coral Sea. I'm moving the AA unit up to Darwin since he seems to want to poke around up there with Seaplanes. My B17s and B-25s did very little on 4 bombing runs against Guadalcanal, in clear weather. I think I'm going to shift them around, maybe try to get MacArthur up to New Guinea. The gathered fleet in this area consists of 2-Heavy Cruisers, 2-Light Cruisers, 2-Destroyers, and 2-subs (thankfully they escaped from the Phillippines, though they will need repairs). I started bringing the New Zealand fighter group online.

USA: Moved the assembled fleet towards Pearl Harbor, escorting two land units. I am half afraid he has the mind to invade Pearl Harbor with the fall of Midway. I think it's certainly a future possibility given the naval superiority right now. I have a few ships left to bring online, but otherwise I lost so many at the beginning, I don't have any huge offensive punching ability. Tarawa has consistently been an open NM island, so I am considering an invasion there at some point.

India/GB:
The British fleet arrives in Africa, but I cannot place all of them. They are in generally good health, but need some work. On their own, they will not be a match. It would take a long time to link up with USA's fleet.

Singapore: Defier overwhelming bombs the unit, and it is finished off with SNLF. However, he is unable to cross the moat. My Large Naval Guns had two round to fire with good odds. I chose the destroyer, -4!

Malaya: After landing the partisan is northern Malaya to cut the railroad link last turn, and then finding out I cannot move it, it has trapped at least four of his units in Malaya. I know he was intending those to go to Burma. That will slow down his progress to capture Burma!

Designer Note: I like having these two partisan units available, I think it adds some unpredictability. However, it sucks not being able to move them. The countries are so fragmented over there, I don't really know what nationality to make them. I will just run into the same problem again.

Dutch East Indies:
My turn: moved the bomber and fighter northeast to try to set it up to attack Bruinei. I can bomb the convoy or oil well there. Also, next turn both capital defenders will be up to full strength. I can then use the 11 MPP to build up something else...

Designer Note: DEI is the gold mine. Japan has to prioritize Burma (to weaken China) and DEI, probably DEI first. In fact, plundering DEI gets you something like 400 MPPs, with an ongoing turn convoy of over 200mpp. Don't delay in capturing it!

Losses:
China: Corp
Britain: Regiment
Best turn so far!

Base Income:
Japan 444
USA 655
GB 115
India 145
Oz 146
China 100
USSR 59 (42%) they continue to mobilize, he is taking units off the front.
DEEI 11
CCP 25

Research:
USA 1 chit in Production. It was cheapest.

New Units:
None purchased. China got a garrison delivered that was purchased earlier. Prolly buy a couple of garrison for the remote islands next turns, maybe some seaplanes.

I would suspect he is going to split up KB. Some will need repairs only available in home waters. Some should be almost full and can get by with 8 supply. Otherwise, I have no idea on where any of them are.

Defier is putting some consistent $ into tech, but he is moving slow in the land campaign...which I think will hurt him in the long run. Building an amphibious fleet is going to be expensive. I also have not had a single sub attack any of my convoy lines.

Turn 13/14 Early/mid April 3 '42.

Communist China:
That southern base regiment is tenacious and gets the most-valuable-unit! 10 attacks later and major losses for the invaders! A real Alamo. Japan losses: Corp-1, 2 DB attacks, 2 light tanks attacks -1, Division-1, 2 battalion attacks-1,2 FF attacks. But alas! They are down to 1 HP, and with little MPPs income, I opt not to reinforce them the +3 points. With nothing left of the base, they opt to run away into China so they will need to be chased down. CC will take a NM hit with the loss of the southern base.

China:
I'm not sure what Defier's plans are for this build up around Canton/Hong Kong (he has at least 2-Corp, 1-Division, 3-Regiment, artillery, Fighter). The closest airfield is 4 hexes through mountains. Roads and villages are decently far apart. DEI would have been a much better target with all those troops IMO. Outside of Canton it gets mountainous and progress will be slow...indeed my village protectors took a beating, but withstood bombers and Corp attacks. Capturing that village won't gain him much, and I can sort of keep him bottlenecked with the mountains and limited roads. The village might fall next turn, I was only able to reinforce to 8HP.
Flying Tigers did there job, but are now down to 2hp after getting bombed (retaliation, I suppose, for doing it to his FF group last turn).
Defier continues to attack the mid section as well. Not as bad as last turn since he focused air power on the South Communists, but he will have more units to spare with the loss of the Southern Base. He now has 2 artillery to strike at the fort.

My turn:
Remember that B-24 I sent to AMMC last turn? It is causing mayhem, chaos, and destruction :) Guessing there were no fighters in the Philippines...whoopsie there goes the port and convoy. Ooo this looks like a nice target...Whoopsie there goes IndoChina harbor (bonus: spotted a Destroyer Transport). Job well done and no losses! This should really throw him for a loop, since everywhere except DEI and Japan itself is in range. Fighters just got a whole lot more important!
Designer Note: I designed the convoys, when shut down, to move to another if one exists. However, the collection efficiency will be 10% less each time a begin/end port is relocated. I didn't like how you end up playing whack-a-port in vanilla-Pacific with no loss of income. Both of these convoys will relocate to another port.

On the other hand, I decided to attack his fighter again. It did not go so well this round. The medium bombers took a mauling, and the American fighter took more damage than it was worth. He took some too, but don't remember how much.

For the southern front, I am sending the Cavalry to the west to strike the garrison. Reinforced the east with my rebuilt Corp, and attacked what I thought was a softer spot, 2:2 damage.

Australia: His sub poking around in the Coral Sea got a prepared shot on the DEI destroyer, -5. I designed it that way for subs to get a 50% prepared shot bonus. Still hurts!

My turn: That sub got severely retributed and is now down to 2 health. I was surprised to find a CL down there, perhaps he was trying to find a safe exit for the sub. The CL was mercilessly attacked by B17s (heavy) and B25s (medium), causing -6 damage, but shooting down a few B25s. I moved some of the heavy cruisers at arm's distance to attack next turn if it is unable to escape.
Sent the Darwin medium bomber to DEI.
Not sensing any imminent threat in the Solomon's area, I decided to do some rearranging. Moved General Blamey to Rabaul to supply the airfields there. It's limited land area to move stuff around, so it will take some turns to get set up.

USA:
My Turn: Opted to raise the second sunk battleship, due to arrive in Jan 1944. I really debated this one, since the war should be fairly decided by then. In the end I decided to do it since I lost all 8 of my PH pre-war battleships, and 150 MPPs is cheaper than new.
Fleet arrives at PH (2 CV, 3 CA, 6 DD, 1 SS). It doesn't have much offensive punch, but it's the best I can get at this point. I don't have any heavy ground units this early in the game, but we will see what kind of hit and run opening I can find for this fleet. CV Hornet arrived, but it needs planes. Operated my last stateside Seaplane out to an island for eyes.

While I still have half a dozen obsolete ships to bring up to health, I feel I am finally at a point with the USA's mobilization to start dropping a research chit every turn.

British Raj/Burma/GB:
Defier continues to bomb Moulmein, but this time he took some light damage to some of the bombers. With AA and Fighters guarding, it won't be such an easy unload anymore.
My turn: India continues to reinforce Burma. I transported some light tanks and unloaded them near Moulmein. Also took the opportunity to move the regiment further south and attack the weak engineer unit. His units still don't have good supply, so not sure if he was an HQ nearby or not. I decided to scope out Chiang Mai (north Thailand) with the Chinese Corp - completely empty! My Chinese Corp is now knocking at the door. Bare minimum it will force him to operate a unit there. If I capture it, great, if not well he still spent the MPPs.

Singapore:
I don't think he has an HQ in Malaya to move his troops into Singapore. He's got two SF sitting outside Singapore, but 2 AP is not enough to get them in with ZoC of the LNG. He bombs the Naval Gun down to 5, which is still drawing supply from Singapore.
My Turn: the LNG fires its shell at a SF unit causing -1hp, bringing it down to 6hp. If he doesn't have an HQ, there are 3 SF units on Malaya that will not be able to get to full health.

Malaya: That partisan unit is still sitting there, blocking the railroad.

Dutch East Indies:
Still no active offense against DEI. I did spot a Destroyer transport (SF unit) outside Indochina, so Defier is getting ready. He will need to move over several of his battleships for de-entrenching if he is using fewer land troops.
My turn: Both capital defenders are now up to full strength, so now I can concentrate on rebuilding other Java defenders. My bomber moving east was a good set up. It ran a bombing run on Brunei and found a sub sitting in port, causing damage. I'm sure that will cause some heartburn :)
I operated the medium Bomber in Darwin to the old airfield. Now I can attack both Sarawak and Brunei ports, though I do have to be weary of even light carriers intercepting. See my notes under China for how much he will be needing fighters.
