Another interesting feature...saving modified ships

Post by Mgellis »

I'm not sure this has been discussed anywhere, but it is possible to save ships modified in one scenario and use them in other scenarios. This is done by making the ship(s) or the group containing the ship(s) into an import/export .inst file. Probably not discussed very often if at all because I don't think this was what the import/export .inst files were originally created to do. In any event, it turns out to be a nice little extra feature that lets people create their own hypothetical database entries and save them for future use.

I haven't tried this with aircraft, but I suspect you could save things like modified sensors and maybe even mounts like swapping out type of automatic cannon for another. Because of the way re-arming works, I'm not sure you could save actual loadouts that can be used and then reloaded at a base. I don't think that will work.

For example, I took CGN 25 Bainbridge and created a hypothetical version with the stern missile launcher removed and replaced with a laser system. I then saved this as an import/export file and can now use it in any new scenario.

Just thought I should mention it. I'd be curious to see what other experimental platforms people come up with. (Yes, I know I just ended a sentence with a preposition. I apologize.)

I put this out there a couple years ago. In fact, I mentioned it in a thread about creating multiple Burke VLS configurations just a couple weeks ago. Its easily the most underestimated tool for designers.

Yes, I have done this with Soviet hypotheticals. It works very well.
