Alert Reinforcements Death March

Korsun Pocket is a the second game using the award winning SSG Decisive Battles game engine. Korsun Pocket recreates the desperate German attempt to escape encirclement on the Russian Front early in 1944. The battle is a tense and exciting struggle, with neither side having a decisive advantage, as the Russians struggle to form the pocket, then try to resist successive German rescue efforts and last ditch attempts at breakout.

Alert Reinforcements Death March

Post by carnifex »

The following screenshot shows a German Alert Reinforcement hex on which a German division is supposed to enter on the following German turn. All the German controlled hexes are currently in supply because there is a German supply source there (where the yellow pointer is).

The Russian player then moves his units to within one hex of the Alert Reinforcement hex. Control of the reinforcement hex does not change at this time, probably due to the presence of the adjacent German engineer unit.

During the German turn, the Alert Reinforcements arrive. However, because the entry hex is also the supply hex, and that hex is adjacent to the enemy units, the Alert Reinforcements arrive completely out of supply.

Not just out of supply, but out of bullets as well. Therefore, the Russian player can easily slaughter the arriving Germans.

I believe that the reinforcement sequence needs to change so that whatever the conditions are on the map, the units themselves will arrive with full bullets so they can at least dig in. I don't mind if the forces arrive out of supply, but the bullet situation signifies that the reinforcing units have been out of supply for two turns now, which is clearly not the case. Also, there is something to be said for a commander who will allow completely unfed and unarmed units to advance to contact in this state. I am incompetent enough - I don't need the AI crippling me even more :)

Wow, haven't seen this before.

I agree that a unit should have at least the bullets in their guns!!

Maybe this can be addressed in a future patch or for the newer Normandy version out later this year.

Usually the arrival of an (alert) reinforcement unit changes to an alternate location when enemy units come too close to the scheduled hex. The enemy distance and new hex location can be specified in the scenario editor.
The same rule applies to the supply sources on the map edges.

In your case we obviously have the bad effect that the supply source stopped working due to close enemy units, but the reinforcements didn´t alter their arrival hex putting them into the mess you have at hand.

In which scenario did it occur?

I think Wallenstein is right in that the supply hex stopped supplying due to the location of the russian units, at the end of the russian turn, and that the germans then arrive at an unsupplied location in their turn. I think the reinforce hex should perhaps have been set to stop when the supply did which I think must have been 1 hex. I am not sure there is much that can be done but I have reported this thread to SSG in case it may be fixed in a later patch.

Edit:______________________________________________

I just revisted this and desided to have a look in the editor at what could have happened. What you cannot see in the pictures above is that the area to the right of the pictures is soviet captured as well. The thing is, that area contains the other hex that the units can land at if this one is blocked. The units are designated to appear regradless, so I am guessing that they appear at the last possible location which just happens to be right in front of the russians. Unfortunate, but then thats war I guess.
