Commando Raid on Dieppe - Testers Wanted
Hi all,
I finally went through... Finished my first Scenario !
It recreates the Assault of N°4 Commando (Lord Lovat, CO) against the 813th Army Coastal Battery at VARENGEVILLE (Codenamed "HESS"). That was the only completely successful action of the whole Dieppe tragedy...

Commando's action in the Dieppe*
Raid of August 19, 1942.*

This scenario is designed to be*
played on the UK side against AI.*

Duration :_30 turns*

The goal is to destroy the target*
AND reembark. Don't forget to plan*
for these 2 missions.*

BACKGROUND*
*
The stubby finger of Lord Lovat*

_"This is the objective. It is a*

_"We land at 0450hrs, we withdraw

_destruction of the target is

_"Oh, by the way, it's at Dieppe"*
*
The commando knew that if they*
failed and the six German six-inch*
howitzers bombarded the narrow*
Dieppe approach there would*
be a great disaster.*
*
For this operation No.4 Commando*
was split into two groups - one of*
88 men commanded by Major Mills-*
Roberts, the second of 164 men led*
by Colonel Lovat.*
*
Their landing beaches were designa*
ted ORANGE 1 and ORANGE 2. *
Mills-Roberts group would land on*
Orange1, force a passage through*
one of two gully's, make its way*
to a fringe of trees some 300 *
yards from the battery and wait.*
*
Lovat's group, far larger, would*
take a longer route to approach the*
battery from the rear. Upon ar-*
rival they would fire a white very*
light, and both parties would*
advance.*
*
Mills-Roberts group on Orange1 suf-*
fered a slight setback. The first*
gully they had attempted to force*
was impassable. *
*
Finding a second gully close-by *
also blocked, he decided to blast*
a way through with a Bangalore*

Bangalores was covered by a low*
level air attack on the battery at*
the same time*
*
They had advanced some 500 yards*
when a gigantic roaring explosion*
virtually shook the air. The bat-*

Changing his plans, Mills-Roberts*
immediately ordered an assault on*

Pleas could you send me a copy angreaves@rrest.freeserve.co.uk
Grumble, as far I can dtermine from my sources that Royal Marine 'A' Commando with attached elements of US Ranger company hit White Beach, the center landing area. The text on the map I have indicates they landed at 0830hrs and withdrew under heavy fire. The text in the paragraphs below indicate they landed around 0520. Either way they withdrew under heavy fire. This was the same beach the Royal Hamitlon Light Infantry assaulted. They managed to get as far inland as far as the casino. Hope this helps.

Tnaks all for comments, here are some comments:
Grumble : Lord Lovat's force was composed of 252 all ranks, including a small party of United States Rangers (the unit's Operation Order refers to "7 attached allied personnel") - source www.dnd.ca - , and there were a few Free French Commando too... - Source: French site of Dieppe town - I supposed these were mixed in the unit's TO, and did not create specific units for these. But if you have more info, I'll be happy to correct it
WB: Thanks !!!
Dan Death : on it's way ... thanks.
Perry : Your sources are correct, but you are on the wrong beach. White beach is one of the main assault beaches (with red) directly in front of Dieppe. My scenario takes places about 3 miles west, on ORANGE 1 beach. I intend to prepare scenario(s) concerning Blue, Red and White Beaches, but it was a too big chunk for a first attempt.
skukko: err, yes there are objectives, but only for Germans... Forgot to set them on my last british OOB correction... I'll correct it ASAP... Do you want to have a new version ?
"AC are useless"... I agree with you, but I did not find the way to improve the cannon efficiency.
Need to set one thread on that topic...During all the day, there were strafing attacks by spitfires on the battery.
"Guns of Hess without guards on turn 7"... Ouch ! Already ??? waiting for more from you...
Thanks to all,
Kord

I used ACs to attack commonly against all fortified hexes I did see, mainly against AAs. But you should look at ACs experience/morale, and perhaps add firecontrol also. But I think that raising exp over 80 does what you after. And I would like to have those Hurricanes with bombs in my control. For calling them in add exp also to FO, now planes were out of contact after their first attack. But this can be just bad luck.
No, there is AI troops without objectives. It doesn't matter much as they will go for VOs, but if played C&C On, they'll go first to the 0.0 and as they can't swim they'll start to search another way to there.
German counterattack ?? LOL I did see Germans after game was over in map-screen...
I had all my troops at the beach in turn13...Hit hard and do it fast I don't know how players better than me does that
Fix and think about my perport and send revised after that to me. I'll be glad to do it again. As whole series of these...
mosh
