The game I've been waiting for
I've been waiting for a good, full theater WWII game for the computer as long as I've been playing computer games. I hope this is it, looks good so far.
Strategic Command was fun but simplistic. Plus it 'only' covers the European Theater. A full world version would have been nice but I don't think the game mechanics map properly to the Pacific Theater.
Hearts of Iron was fundamentally flawed as a design. Too hard to follow what was going on, weak AI, massive bugs, the list goes on.
Axis and Allies was a good board game but overly simplistic and far too easy to beat as a computer game.
This looks like the real deal. The design definitely looks like its levels beyond anything that's been tried before.

RE: The game I've been waiting for
I agree. I've played A&A for well over 15 years now and have always wished for a decent global pc game representation of WWII. This title looks very promising indeed.

RE: The game I've been waiting for
Oh come on guys... HOI isn't that bad anymore... it was heinous in it's inception (v1.0), but has since improved IMMENSELY (v1.06)! Granted it's just MHO on the game, but I can tell you I've burned MANY an hour in gameplay.
Gary Grigsby though is an admitted master at games and I doubt seriously he'd sign on to develop something that was rubbish... Just won't happen... So I'll be watching this one very anxiously for reviews... I too have a long history of A&A play before the computer came along and loved the potential when the PC version came out... Was woefully inadequate however...
Just have to see how this one goes. [8D]

the fact that Mr Grigsby is involved caught my eye otherwise i would have Dismissed this as another A&A look alike.HOI is about all i play, other than a FPS for abit of a change, but World at war will satisfy that PBEM need which HOI cant fill
RE: The game I've been waiting for
I didn't mean to be so hard on HOI, it was certainly a great achievement to pull off a continous time game on that scale. I just don't think it worked.
What I think it needs is the ability to control things in a heirarchal manner like HTTR so you can choose the level of control you want. In otherwords, you would tell an Army Group to attack Poland and it wouldbreak the command down into each army, which would break it down for each corps, then division, etc. They would attack in an integrated manner, call in air support as needed, etc. Or tell a division to move to North Africa and it would take care of getting to the proper port, securing transport, securing escort, and notify you when it has arrived. This sort of thing is needed accross the board in the game from research to production to war.
Then maybe it could work but would require a world class AI. Not sure the PC has the horsepower yet to support an AI that can deal with as many variables as you have in a game with HOI's scope. By I still admire the effort and would never want to discourage a company from trying to make such a breakthrough game.

Nah, it's all good. The early inception of HOI disappointed a lot of people because it was SO BAD out of the box that it soiled a lot of peoples tastes for the game. I can tell you having stated true to it since I purchased it, I've been very impressed with both its improvement and overall playability. While one might get a historical simulation, one of the games strengths is that history doesn't have to repeat itself exactly. Sometimes not at all.
I'm sure that once WaW gets going it'll be a similar run. What few screenies I've seen of the game it's got a ton of potential. Will just have to see. Besides, round the same time (late 04, early 05), HOI 2 will be released. [8D] Will make a nice companion wargame for that one.
Cheers!

RE: The game I've been waiting for
Well guys, looks like Atari is getting in the race. Due out 11/2/2004 is yet another revival of A&A. This one looks to be a RTS version. Yet another HOI...
I found the info on Electronic Boutique's web site under PC games - Strategy
It also has a projected street price of $49.99!!!!!

RTS A&A? Say it ain't so!!!!!!
Ah well, A&A is a great boardgame, but it looks like WAW is going to blow it away. I can't help but drool when I look at the Ost Front map (which reminds me of the detailed "Barbarossa" map that was created as a third party expansion to A&A).

I feel the same about GGWaW
I think also that HOI was a good idea or I wouldn't have purchased it. I also however don't think they pulled it off. [:(]

RE: The game I've been waiting for
I looked more closely at the upcoming Axis and Allies from Attari.
Kind of an odd game. On the strategic level, it sounds a lot like the original A&A but when you go to battle, its a real-time strategy game kind of like Empire Earth's campaign but locked in WWII era.
It will be interesting to see if they can pull that off. Obviously huge scaling issues between the strategic and tactical level!

Don't forget about Clash of Steel. Even though it dealt the only Europe, COS seems the closest to what WOW is going for - fun, fairly historical, but not too much micromanagement.
As for HOI, I'm with the Wargamer reviewer of Crusader Kings, who suggested that Paradox's habit of releasing too early and then patching later is wearing very thin. When you have patches that change so much that legitimate strategies (as opposed to those that exploit a flaw) that worked earlier are no longer viable, you have problems.

Don't forget Third Reich available for free at the www.the-underdogs.com
I just started playing it with the 1.38 patch and it's great. A good grand strategic game to
play while we wait for this one.

it is www.the-underdogs.org not .com [;)]
I'm really excited for this game also. From what I've read so far this sounds like it is turning out to be my dream game. This makes me a very happy man. [:D]

I stopped playing HOI because of the micromanagement necessary to play the game. Has the latest patch addressed this issue? If so, I will start playing it again
