AAR- Taking a stand.

Post by Alexandra »

Hi all. Been a while since I've done a scen AAR so here you all go. Comments welcome.

AAR: Taking a Stand by Wild Bill Wilder.

Monte Sumat, Luzon, Philipine Islands
April 14, 1942

Played as US/Filipino's with all options, including C+C, on.

Mission: My mission is to hold the hill of Monte Sumat. It is in the center of the map. To the east is a large river.

Forces: My initial forces are one Filipino Rifle Company, equpipped with Enfield's, BARs, and Grenades; 2 20mm AA guns, 1 .50 MG, 1 MG Nest, and 2 Log Rifle Pits. Coming towards the hill are a company of cavalry, and pack mules with heavy weapons. We also have a .50 jeep, a M3 command car, and an M3 scout car.

Weather: Rain. Time: 1200 hours. Visibility 1000 meters.

Turn One: Enemy vehicles are seen, probably the spearhead of the advance. They are coming from the north, our own cav from the south.

Turn Two: We can now see enemy infantry and cav as well. *** We kill a scout car with AA gun fire.

Turn Three: The enemy keeps advancing towards the hill.

Turn Four: Enemy cav and vehicles reach the forward slope of the hill, supppoted by arty fire. Skirmishing begins. *** An M6 gun arrives on the hill. It basically an open topped halktrack with a 37mm gun. We mangle, but don't destroy, a cav squad and a horse mounted LMG section.

Turn Five: The fighting turns bloodier. A Zero makes a pass, but does no damage. We lose the north AA gun, overrun by cav, and the M3 command car. It gets killed by a SNLF HQ mortar, and the same SNLF HQ squad damages the M3 scout car. However, my infantry kill a scout car and a tankette in close combat. *** Another M6 arrives, as well as a platoon of US Cavalry. My infantry and US Cav destroy the damaged squads from last turn. My lead M6 misses a tankette, from the flank, 3 times.

Turn Six: The tankette kills the M6, as infantry pushes onto the hill. *** My second M6 avenges it's leader by killing the tankette. My US Cav with Fili infantry support destroys 2 squads of enemy cav. My Fili cav and the mules reach the hill.

Turn Seven: The enemy's infantry advances, taking losses as he does so. He puts pressure on my defending platoons, but they inflict more losses than they take, and either without regard to it, or by accident, his left flank is open now due to the virtual destruction of his cav platoon. *** A platoon of M3 Stuart light tanks arrive on the field! We finish off the cav platoon and damage a wagon that was towing a 105mm gun. We kill another tankette with the M6 as the Stuarts and cav move in.

Turn Eight: They push up the hill, reletlessly. We lose a rifle squad as we inflict more losses on them. *** 4 More Stuarts arrive. We destroy the 105mm howitzer and futher damage it's wagon. We hit the enemy hard on the east flank with tanks, cav, and infantry and destroy a platoon of SNLF. Along the rest of the line, a mule carried MG teams dismount, and our forces, heavily supported by Stuarts, destroy 1 squad and mangle another.

Turn Nine: The enemy pushes into one platoon position, taking losses as it does so. We lose the M3 scout car. *** The Zero makes another, equally ineffective, pass. We fight back along the line, which is still holding, and destroy 3 more squads of the enemy.

Turn Ten: The enemy pushes into another platoon position, as he forces our forces back slightly, though another of his own squads falls. *** We launch an aggressive counterattack. We reclaim a platoon position, and the enemy loses 5 squads, 2 MG teams, his last known tankette, and his HQ element. We have succsfully turned his flank, and destroyed his left and center. All that seems to be remaining is his right, and some engineers entering the fray on the far left, but I already have blocked them off.

Turn Eleven: The enemy advances, slightly, though his remaining forces seem to be in disarray. *** On the left we are content to pin the enemy in place. We attack on the right. We lose a Stuart to carelessness, but retake the position and destroy 3 engineer squads.

The remaining Japanese forces withdraw.

Result: US/Filipino DV 5510 to 515.

Losses: Japan 338 men, 1 Arty, 6 AFV. US/Filipino: 112 men, 1 AFV, 2 APC.

Comments: I'm quite pleased with this win. I was able to get a DV even though I had no arty whatsoever. I was also able to run a mobile, agressive, defense, with C+C on, and had no command problems at all, except with the Fili cav at the very start of the scen, and that actually helped me as I was able to feed them into the counterattack rather than the defense.

Alex,

Playing with no artillery... I do not know what to think: that you are crazy or that you are briliant. Get the adjective that you most like for yourself

Anyway, a DV on defense infront good troops (Japanesse Special Landing Forces are good troops) and using C+C (does this applies to the Japanese as well?) is a very good result.

And, again, no artillery... this is insane! And realistic too.

Keep the AAR coming! And keep the DV's

Salut,
