Any way to observe an experienced player?

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

Any way to observe an experienced player?

Post by nicksinc »

I'm new to spwaw and some wargames, most of my tactics are on the chess board. I've got to grips wit most things, now trying cc to be more realistic. I wondered however if there was a way to watch an expert play or view their pbem, to observe how it should be done. I would find it extremely benificial, to see how a vetran organises his attack/defence compared with myself. I would not be comfortable taking anybody on in combat without greater insight into the gameplay. I've read the forum and fouund plenty of good advice, but a picture tells a thousand words they say.

any help much appreciated

I would be glad to help. One way to do this is to set up a fun pbem game - a scenario - and both pbem's would cc the turns to you. Is there anyone else that would like to help Nick out?

It should be done unsecure, IE hotseat.

I can jump in for such a game, it sounds funny, but I think I am not good enough <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">

Yikes!! Don't believe him.. Mosh is baiting another victom - I was one once <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">

Yes this should be an unsecure game so no passwords needed and be used as a learning guide.

We can post an AAR on this site too <img src="biggrin.gif" border="0">

I have several short scenarios that can work for this too. Let me know what you all think?

Just do It. I'm not sure yet how much help experience is. The 'Fog of War' built into WaW acts against experience on the part of the player. Example; In two turns I sent back last night in one game My Tayphoon with the last HVAR flew past the Flak gun I had targeted and put The Last Rocket into the Firefly of my Company commander. Said firefly was 20+ hexes from the targeted hex. C&C is on , so this might be a problem in a few more turns. My experience from the 100+ PBEM games I've played since 2.3 is that strange things happen. This is the first time I've seen an airstrike go Blue on Blue over a kilometer away. In my second example I was working a Sherman Platoon past 2 Tigers on a hill. I have a M8 behind them, and a 2 man scout team that is sitting 2 hexes behind the Tigers. So I have them spotted real good. I put down smoke in front of a tiger, moved a sherman as far as I could through the huge open space that the Tigers are covering. I check LOS and both Tigers are blocked. Just I case my opponent moves one, I pop my smoke discharger. Better safe then sorry. So I get the turn back and the first thing I see in the replay is my Sherman blowing up. The smoke dischargers didn't work. Again a new thing, I've never seen them not block LOS. So don't worry, be happy. Go over to Combat Command and get on the Ladder( ahem! Join the League). The smell of fresh meat will bring you plenty of action. And you can enjoy learning the hard way, just like every body else.
T. (here is a little freebe on ATG's. Sometimes you can get them to move into your gunsights by putting smoke 2 or 3 hexes in front of them. Watch the replay for the flashes, fire the smoke. Your opponent can move up to the edge of the smoke and keep shooting, and you have a better chance of spotting that #$%& Atg when it moves. If your opponent keeps moving keep firing smoke. Eventually he will move his ATG into range of the Rifle platoon that has been waiting for their shot. Works best against the guys that shoot at everything.)

If I may be so bold as to suggest you read my tactics guide at http://www.fprado.com/armorsite/spwaw_downloads.htm

Search the page for Holt and you will quickly find it.

That sounds like a terrific idea.

If you were really keen, you could set up some sort of web page with sections for each player turn where the phasing player can gave a mini-AAR about just why they did what they did. At the end of each section you could include a saved game (no password) that anyone could download and view the described turn with the VCR function.

However, (there is always something)..

I brought this up some months ago (I think it was with you Larry), that the VCR function only records firing events, not sighting events. This means that if a enemy unit comes out of the brush, spots a friendy unit and retreats back into cover, this event will not be recorded on the friendly VCR playback and the unit will not be visible at the end of the turn. However, if he fires before retreating back out of sight, the event will be recorded and the playback will show the enemy unit before it disappears again.

This is not necessarily a show stopper for a deliberate tutorial scenario as each player can fire some sort of weapon to ensure that the event is recorded.

I think the newbies would really benefit from something like this.

Cheers,
Reg.
