Germany - Winter 1942/1943

Germany - Winter 1942/1943

With our Japanese allies fallen, the outlook for the 1000 Year Reich looks grim. The revitalized American Army landed not in Morocco as thought, but stormed ashore through our Vichy allies (I knew those guys would disappoint!).

A large allied army is not entrenched there & we do not have the forces available to mount an immediate counterattack - it remains to be seen if we are able to contain this second front.

The creation of this "Second Front" has reset our defense priorities. Our forces in the Middle East & Africa are no longer in position to help our defense - so we withdrew from Iraq (and built a more defensible line in TransJordan) and brought as many troops home as we could manage. We also withdrew from Morocco, creating a more compact perimeter with more forces.

We also sent our U-Boats against the combined Allied Fleet in the Western Med & scored much success - damaging a fleet carrier and sinking several transports. More subs are coming off the lines & we plan to make it very, very expensive to keep Allied warships within range of our U-Boats.

In the East, despite the frigid winter (although Russian prisoners say that the Winter of 1941 was much worse) we continued our offensive against the Red Army. Our Finnish allies advaned to take Archangelsk, while our own forces moved through the Ukraine & into the Caucusus - capturing Kharkov & Rostov & linking with our forces that had seized the oil fields (further damaging Russia's resource base).

We also advanced through Belorussia & towards Smolensk. Like two giant jaws, the two halves of our offensive prepare to close around Moscow - hopefully destroying the Russian beast & allowing us to turn our full force agains the Americans. We look to the beginnings of 1943 with much trepidation, but some hope that we may survive this war somewhat intact.

I'm amazed at the apparent easiness with which you go through RU defenses. Also I must admit I don't know how to use the turn replay feature properly (alpha) so I can't analyze your moves in detail. [:D]

Whatever... Marshall of the Soviet Union Georgi Zhukov is hard at work preparing Operation Mars - Soviet winter offensive with aims to give Germans bloody nose in the East. Current set of rules gives significant benefits to the Russians in winter in general, and in the first winter of war in particular, so I *must* try to capitalize on that.

(Waiting for the Japanese zombie to send me his turn [:D])

Oleg,

I'm gotten lucky - but I've reaped the whirlwind & I'm sure I'll be paying the piper soon enough.

Operation Mars, why do I have a bad feeling about this one....

Germany stands tantalizingly on the brink of their planned Archangel-Astrakhan stop line. Will they be able to acheive this goal, or will the defenders of the Motherland hurl them back?

I'm thinking of mounting the largest Parachute operation in the history of warfare, using First VVS Air Army to air drop First Para Corps... somewhere.... to test the alpha paradrop rules.

Crazy ideas, need food.

I'm off to lunch...

Do I get on your nerves with these propaganda posters? Idea is to bring the right atmospehere to this AAR [:D]

We'll kill the Fascist beasts - after lunch (turn is with me)

Not me, I love those old posters. There are a couple in particular I've been trying to find to purchase: one featuring a soldier firing a machine gun in Stalingrad, and on a wall in the background the "Soldier Save Us" poster appears; the second features sov soldiers clad in winter gear pressing forward the attack. No luck so far finding either of them.

My neighbor has a poster I've been trying to find for years on the net.

It shows an American GI holding a cup of coffee with a big smile on his face and the caption reads:

"How about a nice cup of shut the f*ck up!"

Underneath it says the standard, "Loose lips, sink ships"

I'll see if I can take a digi of it and post it.

We decided to postpone Operation Mars, in view of strong German forces of the Armee Gruppe Mitte which are proving extremely resilient (in our other games [:D]) and decided to launch Operation Arctic Storm instead.

In largest Para operation in history, First Airborne Corps has been air dropped in Vologda province, re-taking it (BTW, it was empty, but hey it makes for great propaganda victory). In other part of the same operation, Archangel province has been liberated of the Nazi Fascist murderers and their Finnish collaborators.

Picture: first part of the Operation Arctic Storm - you can use Heavy Air Units to do paradrops. Paras are useful to attack enemy rear, and have some special modifiers when doing amphibious invasions (a la Pegasus bridge/101st Airborne in Normandy).

Here we have Airbone infanrty unit "riding" the heavy air icon, and being dropped in Vologda province. We will discuss this further on dev board...

We transferred more units from Siberia. Generally we were reluctant to attack Germans since I know from my other games how extremely ressillient they are, especially Mech units. We will try to attrit them more before attacking.

This is the situation in the south. We entered Caucasus, to find it's infrastructure practically destroyed. We also entered Iraq, but when attacked, Iraq reverted to WA possession! Obviously it just reverted to whichever force was occupying it beforte the Germans came. This is obviously a bug and will be posted to dev board.

Anyway, in this game we will be happy to leave the Middle East to our US allies, and concentrate on defending the Motherland...

Oleg,

I was aware of that issue (if you attacked Iraq, it would revert to WA control) - it's the reason I took the step back - to put some room between your MASSIVE army in Persia & me. The resources there aren't doing me a lick of good anyway....Its a war to the knife now....

Good luck!

Sorry, not a bug. This is the problem with inter-Allied cooperation. They really don't like units of the other countries permenently taking over their old territories so you are not allowed to stay in them once retaken. Yes I know this can lead to some unusual situations, but you know, would the Western Allies really like Russia driving through the middle east? And please don't bring up history on me about how the Soviets and British met up in Persia.

Well, if that's intended behavior I won't argue against that. But... I think MB said he was able to take Afghanistan completely *after* it's been taken by RU. He simply entered Afghanistan (which was empty, but RU controlled at the moment), attacked, and it became WA territory. That seemed like a practical way of exchanging territories between allies.

MB may shed more light on the way he took Agfh., perhaps on dev board...

The Grey Plague expands accross the world!

And Operation Olympus is performed with particular success, 3 years early!

My, my, my!

BTW: Regarding the 'relative ease' with which England and Japan were invaded, might I suggest something?

One any of certain particular territories are invaded (England and Scotland, the Japanese core island, Moscow, and probably a couple others, Berlin, and maybe one or two others, etc. - basically the core territories of the four main players) I would think it appropriate for a 'scratch militia' to immediately be formed in the capitol at the initiation of the assault (thus they could appear on the same turn as such an attack is launched and could defend the capitol). This should be a one time event only for each major player (US and UK could be tracked seperately). A few militia units suddenly appear, how many could be variable and probably depend upon the country.

This would A. make taking the core territories out more difficult, B. make taking out any of the major players <cough>Japan<cough> more difficult, and C. be fairly realistic.

When the Soviet Union was invaded, a large number of troops were mobilized in fairly short order. These were poorly equipped, poorly trained, and of questionable morale (thus the NKVD commissars who would make sure they kept going in the right direction), but there was a lot of them.
There was of course the Volkstrum in Germany (although, they were kinda raised in advance, but same principle).
Many beleive that anyone that could pick up a gun (pointy stick, rock, etc.) would have fought if Japan had been invaded, and I believe the same would have been true if England or mainland US was invaded.

Again, I don't know how feasable this would be - kinda late in the development process to be asking for significant code changes - but its a thought. maybe Joel can speak to this.

I think this is a great idea. I hope the designers will give it consideration.

it wasn't Afghanistan, it was Northern India which was RU for some reason in my last turn. (i undid the move as i didn't want to upset the more powerful force in the area [:D]) so i think Northern India is still RU controlled which seems to contradict (ie. bug?) Joels earlier statement. i'll look into it further tonight when i get some time.

well we just got version 1.700 Alpha today and it has incorporated this feature with the caveat that it may need some tweaking.
