Lightweight players

Post by Hartford688 »

A stupid question perhaps since I have been reading this forum for months, but...

Is there anything in this game for "lightweight" players who can put in maybe 10 hours a week? The scope of the game impresses me very much, and in theory the individual unit detail sounds great. BUT I reckon this looks more like full time work than part time entertainment. HttR I can get a blast from in an evening. This looks like I have to study for weeks and take a full weekend to get anything from. With job and family, that aint gonna happen any time this side of retirement. Granted the full campaign is clearly a write-off, are the smaller scenarios more manageable? Where you can get a taste of the real deal without having to take vacation?

Given a limited number of $ and hours...

Mariannas is fun and pretty short. Gives you a good feel for what Japan has in store for her.

Try the Rising Sun scenario as Allies. Its fun and fast. The are plenty of short scenarios. You can always find someone to play by mail who can only do one turn every day or so.

There are several smaller and more managable scenarios. Over time, I expect users will create even more using the editor we've provided, and some of these will likely show up in patches as "official" scenarios. So, yes, you don't need to play the big campaigns to enjoy the game. With the editor, I hope this game will become the defacto Pac War game used to replay smaller operations during the war.

Find a dedicated player on the other side of the world and
you can play a turn every other day or so as I would imagine
there will be no turns sent out every 5 to 10 minutes like in uv.

I've actually been playing BTR with someone in Austria; it works out quite well, we can get about 3 sometimes 4 turns a week. (Yes I know, it will take longer than the original war did)
Fun though[:)]

I consider myself to be in the group that you are describing. What with other commitments, I have a hard time even averaging a turn a day in UV, but that doesn't mean that I love the game any less. My intention is to play the shorter scenarios for the first few months and then start the main cmapaign on Dec 7th and try to see if I can finish ahead of schedule.

The beauty of a huge game like this is that on a computer it doesn't matter how long it takes you to finish the campaign. Your kids and pets can't wipe out the game map!

I've had a lot of fun letting the AI run most of the war except for a small part I pay close attention to. I try to "micormanage" two main campaigns at once and just let the AI do everything else. Sometimes I "wander" when I see the AI doing something that will interfere with my plans (I bet MacArthur wished he "Play Nimitz" at crucial times [:'(]. It is possible to "localize" the attention to detail and still have a lot of fun playing.

I wouldn't worry about it, you'll play what you can play, I'm sure you will have no problem matching up with a PBEM player that will fit you time frames. I played chess in high school via US Mail. This will be a snap.

Been playing UV steady for 2 years I usually find an hour or two each day to play that's based on my current work load, any kickback time I get I'm usually watching the tube with the wife while playing UV on the laptop. I've be able to get 3 or 4 hours in a night

It all really comes down to planning. planning for work, planning for play.

If you can't find anybody I help support your habit, Just give me some time to explore the game.

Now that sounds good.

Thanks to everyone. Sounds like even a 12 stone lightweight like me might be in the frame for this game. Looking forward to it.

Now's there's my man! That's me. Got a 3.5 year old Dell Inspiron 7500 and sit there in my easy-chair in the evenings after the nightly jog and dinner and I either have VisualStudio IDE open, coding my latest "thing", or playing UV..... Can idlely talk to the wife (till she inevitably nods off) whilst doing my thing.....all while glancing at whatever is on the tube, if it is something I care about..... That old laptop is getting long the tooth though, these days.....

I have an Inspiron 8100, and do exactly the same thing. I have found that I only need to watch the TV occassionally, with my left eye.[:D]
I actually have wireless internet in the house, so I can keep up with this forum, while watching TV (with the left eye), and talking to the lady.[:)]
Neat arrangement.

You nailed that one.

I even sacrifice the TV so my wife will stare at the tube and drift off, then I even switch the channel on her.

Sat are honey do lists both hers and mine, I tire her out there too, She's down by 7 those nights, also by passing out honey do lists to her have resulted in a decline in my own honey do lists from her.

Friday nights are party time.

Now if I can train my job and clients the same way Life would be great.

Run to the hardware store, computer store, etc. bath the dog, get the cars washed. She's charged with all the light gardening around the house too. In reality we both really have very small honey do lists.
