Newbie is lost: help!

Post by Joro »

Hi all, I downloaded the game today and after about an hour of staring at some moving 'things' am completely lost with what is going on. Have to admit, I haven't played original SP. I have played extensively the Panzer General series, though.

My question is: "where does one start to learn this game?" I tried to read Larry Holt's guide, but it was too theoretical and not much help for this guide. I tried the 'tutorial scenario' but that scenario is NO help whatsoever! Nobody guides you or tells you what to do. Help!!!

hello been playing since the first sp game came out so here are a few things you should know.
1. read the pdf manual it explains everything.
2. the tutorials showcase different weapons and how to use them.
3. left clicking on a your unit makes them your current unit under your control..if you click on a hex near them they will move there or as far as they can. if an enemy unit is near and can be seen clicking on them will cause your unit to fire at them if they can.
4. the tutorials dont tell you what to do.
5. i know this is not in depth, but the manual does tell you how to play.
6. it takes awhile to learn everything but once you start you'll be hooked.[:D]
Hope it helps

Thanks guys! All good suggestions. I will read the manual (didn't even know it had one before it was posted) and the tips on the link were quite useful. After some 'learning' I am hoping to play against a human ... somebody merciful to n00bs! [;)]

Hi Joro and welcome aboard!

I must say that Germ29 is wrong as far as his item 4) is concerned: tutorials DO tell you what to do!

There are 9 different tutorials coming with spwaw 8.2, they are in first 9 slots of the scenarios list. And for each of them there is a step by step guide in the manual.

I’m pretty sure you’ll do far better, after you played with them all!

I've been at this for about a week now, welcome aboard, the tutorials definately help. The manual....not so much. Some concepts, like the artillery side of things- even with the how to use arty thread here- still don't seem to work properly for me but the learning process is a slow go. Fortunately these aren't real guys I'm killing.

I stand corrected...PLS forgive me[&o]. I was under the impression that he wanted some on screen pop up or voice files that walked him through it like some other games have. I in no way ment the tutorials were not usefull...god knows i've played them many times.

The learning curve is pretty stiff! I seem to lose quite a few vehicles ... too much information in numbers, not enough visual stuff.

Germ29 was right: I did want to see tutorials that walk you through the game with voice and on-screen demonstrations. It would have slashed my learning curve by a factor of 10, I think.

The tutorial is a nice simple game but you are right, some better walkthrough type stuff would have helped.

Remember that 8.2 again has _nine_ tutorial scenarios. See manual pages 81-104 for those other tutorials. The first one is handled at the beginning of the manual.

In a perfect world, yes.
But do you really think that a game based on an engine which more than 10 years old and developed on DOS, could have these sort of features?
