My God....what have I gotten my self into?
Ok, I am about ready to start a game.
Now, I know this may be stupid, but this is my first real wargame I have played (I played some of a pc wargame before, called Rising Sun from a few years ago).
I have just spent the last 2 days going through the manual, skimming most of it. Anyways, the game does look daunting, but I am up for the challenge (I think [:D] ).
Anyways, what should I start out doing? I have thought about running a computer vs computer game for a bit, just to check out what goes on. Or, should I just jump in with a small scenario? Don't want to go through the tutorial again, but want to get into the actual game play. But, just not sure really how to go about it....
Any advise??
NOTE: Please be nice to this newbie!!

Smaller scenario with no production for starters. Get use to the interface.

Scenario #2, Rising Sun - Play as the Allies against the Computer.
You will get beaten up but there is not too much to control so you are basically learning how to defend.
Then flip sides and see what it is like to have to attack.

Not so much a game, more a way of life...[;)] I'd echo the others, start with a small scenario, or the Tutorial. You'll soon find yourself hooked.

You can also pick a scenario, set all the Control Zones to Computer Control, then just pick a few units to run manually and watch what the AI does with all the other units.
You can later assign those units back to the AI and run something else for a few turns. CV TFs for a few turns, then try some land combat for the next few turns for example.

Welcome! I'd recommend doing the tutorial, step-by-step. It's very well done. There are a couple of typos that might confuse you, so feel free to ask questions.
After that, try a smaller scenario. I like the look of scenario 6. If you're completely insane, load up the big enchilada as the Allies.

For a first wargame you have dived right into the deep end.
I would have tried some other game first.

First wargame? Wow. Was Everest your first hike? You sure can pick a challenge. I think if you have a passion for the subject this game will eventually become a breeze...or at least a mild typhoon. [;)]

Well,I never played UV or a game on this scale and I started 'the big one' and never looked at the tutorial or manual.
Just take youre time and explore everything.Just use common sense and refer to the manual when needed.
The hardest thing about the game is staying focused if playing a big campaign because there is a lot going on and a lot to remember.

RE: My God....what have I gotten my self into?
Yepp, that pretty much describes my situation as well [:)]
Now I want to start the big one as Nippon.
Problem: as oposite to the Imperial High Command I have (almost) no clue about enemy position and valuable targets.
Result: before actually starting the scenario I would have to make a general assessment of all the forces, bases, locations, production capacities, put here whatever important feature I don't even know anything about yet for both sides to get a rough idea of missions and goals... Depending on how much time I am willing to spent, this will easily take a week or ten until I am able to make my first move [X(] HORROR
The longer I think about it, it might be better to chose the allies first, as my current state comes closer to their position at the beginning of the war (I would "only" have to make an assessment of the allied assets and then just wait for them to attack)
Edit: ... and now a friend asks me to go to the beergarden tonight - when shall I ever get the time to play the game...

I admire your gumption!
Jumping in to WITP with little gaming experience is sort of like taking up extreme deep water scuba without bothering to learn how to swim first.
