if you've read the forum enough, you'd have been warned about those things.

Ah, the disadvantage of stacking, was it a core map?

Been there, done that.

Since that day, every so often I go into my C:\Matrix Games\Titans of Steel - Warring Suns\data\squads folder and make a copy of all my squads...

I also make a save of the game as soon as I start the round... This way if it really goes horrible I can re-start at the beginning.

Sometimes I will do another save as a "check point" especially after a lucky hit on the enemy. Oh AC/20 to the head? I'll just make a quick save here. [:D]

I don't understand? Just eject or kill that last jock to lose the battle. Then you can replay from the start usually. At least that is my experience. Your entire crew would be brought back to life as if the battle never occured.

I think it's only in Campaigns that your tem can restart untouched after losing a battle. Majama's ways out of that disaster are a) to restart from the Autosave, as long as it predates the trigger for the explosions; or b) to go to the Autosace, Exit from the game and buy the team out of its mission (from the HQ module).

a) autosave is done too late, after first explosion, then nothing can stop extermination
b) buying teams from battle is too expensive, no chance

Nothing wrong with replaying from saves. That's why the feature is there. Not everyone plays hard core. I myself abuse the save feature when I'm not playing my hard core squad. Of course nowadays I tend to forget that I'm not playing my hard core squad and just play all the way through without saving.

Bah, saves are for recovering from crashes [;)] Try losing your most promising Nethack character ever because you forgot to unwield the cockatrice corpse you were using, one little tap of the 'x' key and I could have won with that character.

Honestly though, replaying doesn't typically encourage learning good play techniques, techniques you'll need if you are intending to play hard core or multiplayer. Its not like I would let you fall back on the autosave is you fail a charge and land on your rear. [:'(]

Besides that, its a pride thing, I could honestly make YAFAP1 on rgrn2 knowing that I beat the game the way the creators intended. Not that ToS has a comparable end, but being able to show off in a Hard Core AAR is close enough.

On that note, is there a way to turn on saves for failures in the campaigns? I've always wanted to see if I could take some of those campaigns when I have to worry about losing bad.

1. Yet another first ascension post - a post acclaim that you have beat Nethack
2. Rec.games.roguelike.nethack - place one typically makes YAFAPs

I don't play nethack very much. I prefer ADOM. And I don't get very far in either game.

I'd sure like to see you beat Vossler's Gambit with squad saving turned on regardless of outcome.

hehe[:D]

That would likely not be a pretty sight. Vossler's Gambit was meant to push the edge of what's feasibly doable. The squad saving turned on allows that without too much fear of losing high level squad after high level squad.

BTW frog, have you tried going any further in Vossler's Gambit? or you solely Hard Core AAR for a while? (my AAR is on temporary hiatus... had an itch to play a Grand Campaign game of EUII... Russia is starting to eye the Ottomans if that don't go well there's always colonizing North America... If I can't have Georgia in Europe.. I'll have it in North America)

Can't say I have. I've only beaten the third map (on the first try, I could hardly believe it). I haven't gone on to the fourth, I might have to build up some money in random battles because my squad's just blown a lot of money refitting their machines to suit each mission.

My AAR, I'm saving the detailed blow by blow reports for the 100th Battle. Too bad Red Rose didn't fight in all of them.

BTW, Isn't it a bit too hard to coordinate 16 titans? I'd stay away from those. 8 is a handful already.
