carrier training pilots

if you run training missions while aboard a carrier, will the unit get carrier trained sometimes?

No, carrier trained vs carrier capable is a binary set outside the game engine.

If you want to get more pilots/planes into a carrier trained group, train up your carrier capable groups then disband them into your trained group.

Feel free to add it to the wish list though if it's not already hiding there.

Hi, Be carefull not to place too many pilots in a carrier group. You can have 10 percent more aircraft and pilots then a CV's listed capacity.

Example Zuikaku Capacity 72 can hold 77 aircraft and still conduct flight ops.

A shore Daitai holds 27 aircraft and can break down into 3x9AC groups.

As long as adding 1 of these 9AC groups does not place the carrier over 10 percent you are fine. If you add more then the groups max size the excess will go into reserve and be used to future loss.

To combine a landbased but carrier capable group with a carrier group you need to move the carrier group to the base and then disband the land group into it. (not withdraw) when asked if you want the group to reform say yes. When it comes back on map you train it.

Now move the carrier group back to it's CV .

Wait for all the aircraft in the group on the CV to be ready before moving it to the land base or you will create a sub group that will not auto combine when the parent returns. (if you do leave a sub group just wiat for the ac to repair and move it to the land base where it will combine and everything is fine.)

Groups that are assigned to CV cannot be disbaned. If you find you have orphan CV groups after losing a CV these groups can be used for other CV (either rotating with groups on CV are become a group for CV that has none.)

If there is no place to use an orphan CV unit other then land basing it make it become an active front line unit and disband other groups into it to keep it full. (since it can never be disbanded its self) Then you can use the other units for training replacements.

so, if a carrier group has more than 10% aircraft on it the aircraft will fly no combat missions anymore? did I get that correctly?

That's correct. You could still sail the carrier to another port and offload planes though.

Mog, For Zuikaku isn't 72 X 110% 79.2 or rounded down to 79? Just asking cause I've been had 79 on her and flew ops just fine.

Hi, Yes that is correct. There are times you might want to over load a carrier because you are not going to conduct flight ops.
When you ship airgroups by sea they arrive in a damage condition and have to repair. Suppose you want to move 3xDaitai of A6M2 to a base they cannot reach otherwise but you want them to operate right away.
Move a fleet Cv like Zuikaku to their location. Place Zuikakus groups ashore and load the 3 A6M2 Daitai (81 AC overloading Zuikakau) When Zuikaku reaches their new base off load them and they are ready to fly. (Zuikakus air groups can fly to meet her as soon as she gets in range of where they are located at the time.

Yes 10percent of 72 would be +7 for 79 total. Just bad math by me.

I think we covered everything concerning CV and their airgroups here?

Heh, well since I've got your attention, lemme ask a related question. I use the Mogami Training School method for replacing pilots, especially carrier groups. I seem to be short on Val's, just the one Daitai. You have this problem too or am I just too rough with my dive bombers [:D]

Hi, I thought there were 3 Daitai of Val (under size at start) Pescadores, Kagoshima and Tokyo. Use the sort LBA DB filter. The Kagoshima Daitai has 16 AC at start.
I don't add to it cause 2x5AC and 1x6AC take care of 3 CV the Pescadore Daitai has 4 AC and that leaves the 27ac Daitai to form 3x9AC groups. There will be a lack of Val after that so becarefull.

By early 1943 you should have 81 trained Val pilots. So you can afford to fight 1 or 2 CV versu CV battles in 1942 where you lose Val pilots. And you can send the rookies out if you have to. They begin training in Mar 1942 so by Sept should be good enough to not kill themselves taking off and landing. Condsider them flak bait for a while but depending on mission can be usefull.

Also don't be afraid to rotate groups. If a CV is damaged it's airgroups are free to replace a group or go to shore accept pilots and train. Junyo and Hiyo can provide groups. There will almost always be a CV or two in the yard that can be training it's own airgroup or providing a replacement goup for another group that has to train.

The CV begin the war with surplus planes so they can accept pilots while they are in the pool.

In chapter 14.5 bottom of page 190. If the number of aircraft exceed 115% of capacity only transfer mission may be flown.

Hi, Well there you go. Zuikaku can hold 83 ac now.

Mogami that rule is hidden in logistic. Not a place anyone would normally look for.
