Artillery not considered "combat" units?

Post by Ric123 »

The automatic overrun rule regarding what happens to artillery when a "combat unit" attacks it seems unhistorical. I am sure most game designers have read accounts of such encounters, whether deliberate as when paratroops, commandos or guerrillas attack a battery, or random as in the case of stragglers and recon units coming upon them. Defense seemed to be just a matter of cranking down the gun barrels or rocket tubes for direct firing with every spare gunner fighting as infantry. Batteries were prepared for such encounters even to the extent of having old fashioned canister on hand. AA batteries regularly went to the front to lend the devastating fire of their machine cannon to support the infantry. I am sure many veteran ex gunners feel slighted by this auto overrun rule.

I believe the correct answer is that it's a matter of hex scale and the artillery battalion could not deploy to defend a 4 km hex in the same way that an infantry or armoured unit could. Given one day turns it might be unreasonable to expect an artillery battalion to provide anything more than token resistance to an attack.
