Questions
Questions
I have some questions about Supremacy I was hoping you could please answer:
1.) What is the save system like for the game? Can you save at any time?
2.) Are there multiple display resolutions available for the game, or will it be a fixed resolution?
3.) How exactly do you obtain units?
4.) Is there a base of operations that you build/upgrade?
5.) How exactly do you get into missions, is it a system where you go from one level to the next, or is it something more dynamic where you choose where you want to attack?
6.) Will there be a variety to the missions, or is it simply defeat all of the enemies on a map?
7.) Could you describe the adaptive AI a little more? Will there be difficulty settings?
8.) Do the commanding officers have any special abilities/powers that you can utilize during the game?
9.) Will you be able to alt-tab out of the full screen game, or is that still an unsupported feature?
10.) Will there be a demo and about when will it be released?
Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions!

RE: Questions
Hi Serian, here are the answers.
Yes, there are various resolutions depending on your video card.
You can play either in full screen or window mode.
There are also couple ways to obtain/steal units on battlefields which require different technologies.
You gain different upgrades from occupying stations. Each station gives you one technology.
You pick a mission to play from the very beginning. You dont get level advanced when you finish a game, instead, you get a score according to your fighting and strategy.
Currently, there are 7 different types of missions, and they all require different strateries to complete.
For instance, in "Conquer Game", you need to conquer all the planets to win. And in "Rescue Hero", you need to be fast enough to rescue the hero and send him back to a safe planet.
In addition, you could also set a limit on playing turns and limit time for each turn. You get much different tension and playing experiences by doing this.
There is no difficulty setting in Supremacy game.
The AI will not try to cheat you internally. It also learns certain things while playing with you.
The COs support the army by their race properties.
For instance, your whole army gets more attack points if your CO race is Chaar especially on your Chaar units.
Unfortunately, we have not supported alt-tab for the full screen game in this release version.
We've built a demo version in our hands. However, we have not decided whether it's going to be published.
If a demo makes players happy, we definitely will do it.

You can save the game anytime when it's your turn. You can also save a network game, and load it to play with the same opponent or another.1.) What is the save system like for the game? Can you save at any time?

Yes, there are various resolutions depending on your video card.
You can play either in full screen or window mode.
You create units in factories on your planets. Different planets produce different types of units.3.) How exactly do you obtain units?

Your planets are the bases of your army, they produce the resources, and build units.4.) Is there a base of operations that you build/upgrade?

RE: Questions
Thank you Haska for answering my questions so quickly. I think releasing the demo would be a great idea. It should also help generate more interest in the game. There are also a lot of gamers out there that will not buy something unless they have tried it first.
RE: Questions
hello hello, been reading these forums for awile and it bugged me soo much to ask some questions about your game here that I got my lazy behind up and sign up on to the forums here, yes. . . I am very lazy
BUT
I have some qood questions and probibly some good input and feedback for the devs, all you have to do is interpret my spelling and all shall be known and revealed
firstly, what got my attention of this game was that it is not a historical wargame, to put it clearly I love wargames with random maps or arena styled maps (equal sides and area), the only other game I like on matrix games site is Titans of Steel, But matrix is a good company, they seem to be in it for somthing other than making money and all I have to say is there really the only company worth checking out on the pc gaming scene for me.
any way to my history short, I am a fps player turned wargamer, yes you heard that right
ok ok, to the questions
Q - my main complaint with most non historical wargames is the turns for the ai go way to fast, I want to take in whats going on, is there a way to set the speed of enemy moving peaces in combat and non combat movements?
Q - when I look at yor game I think of advance wars for gba (game boy advance), but your units are single wich is cool, what is interesting about advance wars is its almost like a mini puzzle sometimes, I also think of nectaris (I played the pc version, mabe a remake?), is supremacy kinda puzzle like or is it more chancy, yes I am not an experenced wargamer so I don't know all the lingo but I think I am the audence your trying to get right.
Q - what kinds of custimization is there besides the main features like leaders.
Q - can the ai really play all the different game types, cause that would be sooo cool?
Q - how many planet maps are there, will there be repitition of planet maps in one game like conquest, or did I miss somthing and the maps will be randomly generated?
Q - what games do the devs like playing, I get this feeling you guys are excited about what your doing, I think I get this feeling from the actual sreens and art, looks like your having alot of fun with your creativity, most game developers don't seem to show this very much
Q - can you turn off the music, not the sound effects and listen to a CD while playing in say. . . ms media player (or whatever its called)
Q - what kind of music do you feel goes alonge with your game, it was mentiond that the battles can go really fast if you want them to. . .. hmmmm
Q - will players be able to set there own profile for the game and in doing so save the ai knowledge for that players profile or is there no way to reset the ai for someone else like my sister.
Q - mabe this was already mentioned, can't remember, is the game turn based on initiative or do you move all units on your turn, um to clearify is a turn for all your units in one shot or single unit per turn/round then there other guy goes?
Q - do leaders have special one use powers in like say. . . . . advance wars
Q - how do you tell your units from the enemys, units have different colors but I don't think the colors reflect the leaders side???
Q - will the be voice acting for caracters in the single player story campain?
Q - are all the attack hits animated the same for the whole game, not the animations of the units, but the explosions etc, is there blood and um. . .. alien blood, sparks etc
. . . . um. . .. .
A - I like this game alot, i'm gonna buy it, just thought you should know

RE: Questions
ORIGINAL: theswitch
yes. . . I am very lazy
Anyone who writes so many questions cannot be lazy. I'll do my best to answer them, though I may give brief answers on most because there are so many.
Q - my main complaint with most non historical wargames is the turns for the ai go way to fast, I want to take in whats going on, is there a way to set the speed of enemy moving peaces in combat and non combat movements?
While there is no control over how fast you see the AI turns executed, they are at the same animation speed as your own, so it's easy to follow what's going on.
Supremacy is neither puzzle-like nor chancy, it is a strategy game. If you plan ahead and use better judgment than your opponent, you will win. The only somewhat chancy element are Space Pirates, who will ocassionally ambush you. But even they are not truly based on chance -- since once you encounter a Pirate, it tips you off to where he is cloaked and waiting.
Q - what kinds of custimization is there besides the main features like leaders.
Supremacy is very open-ended. You choose your Commanding Officer (CO), and your playstyle is what "customizes" your game.
Q - can the ai really play all the different game types, cause that would be sooo cool?
Yes, the AI is very versatile.
Q - how many planet maps are there, will there be repitition of planet maps in one game like conquest, or did I miss somthing and the maps will be randomly generated?
I was not the level designer, so if I am wrong bear with me. I know there are at least 4-5 maps for each type of planet, and I believe there is little chance of repetition in any given space map. You will not see the same ground battle maps over and over during a space battle. They are not randomly generated, they are all carefully made and tested.
Q - what games do the devs like playing, I get this feeling you guys are excited about what your doing, I think I get this feeling from the actual sreens and art, looks like your having alot of fun with your creativity, most game developers don't seem to show this very much
We all love strategy games. Some that we've played/discussed while creating Supremacy are Advance Wars, Final Fantasy Tactics, Age of Mythology, Age of Empires, and others I can't remember at the moment. Several of us are also avid RPG gamers, a few of us have played Everquest for quite some time (Everquest2 and Planetside right now for me). Basically we all love games, so we play a lot of them.

Q - can you turn off the music, not the sound effects and listen to a CD while playing in say. . . ms media player (or whatever its called)
Yes, you can.
Q - what kind of music do you feel goes alonge with your game, it was mentiond that the battles can go really fast if you want them to. . .. hmmmm
Our game has adaptive music. As the tension on the battle field grows, the music will change to reflect that. If your opponent is bringing 10 battle cruisers into your territory, and you send in a defense for, get ready for some intense music. As things calm down again, so does the music. It's really amazing, Michael Sweet did a great job. I would say the music is electronica, but I think you'd have to ask Michael.
Q - will players be able to set there own profile for the game and in doing so save the ai knowledge for that players profile or is there no way to reset the ai for someone else like my sister.
Not sure what you mean, but you can save your game. The AI difficult is not customizable, however.
Q - mabe this was already mentioned, can't remember, is the game turn based on initiative or do you move all units on your turn, um to clearify is a turn for all your units in one shot or single unit per turn/round then there other guy goes?
The turns are not based on initiative, you move all of your units at once (or choose not to move some).
Q - do leaders have special one use powers in like say. . . . . advance wars
The leaders do not have special powers other than how they enhance your units, but you can gain special powers from the Upgrade Stations in space.
Q - how do you tell your units from the enemys, units have different colors but I don't think the colors reflect the leaders side???
From a distance, enemy units have an hp that is the color of their commander. Also, if you roll over a unit (to get info about it), the stats dialog is outlined in the color of their commander.
Q - will the be voice acting for caracters in the single player story campain?
All of our Commanding Officers are animated and have voice acting.
Q - are all the attack hits animated the same for the whole game, not the animations of the units, but the explosions etc, is there blood and um. . .. alien blood, sparks etc
There are many dozen different particle effects you will see throughout the game (exlosions, sparks, unit special abilities, etc.), as well as some other special effects (orbital blast beam, tractor beams, etc.). We have tried to include as many high-quality effects as possible.
I will tackle the next set of questions soon.

Hi again.

Q - will there be an in game browser for multiplayer games
Yes, this already exists. You can connect to a central game server and join various game lounges to find other players to play with.
Q - will I be able to chat with my opponent while playing him/her?
Yes.
Q - is there potential for modding, can't remember if that was answerd already
Yes. We will provide the map editor tool after Supremacy comes out, and the unit textures are readily edittable (they are not in a proprietary format). You cannot reproduce/distribute (and other copyright infringing activities) our textures, but feel free to use them as guidelines to create your own mods.
Q - how long does it take to load up a planet map and than how long does it take to load back up the main space map if playing conquest or similer, probibly depends on the size of the maps I guess? also I am running a pentium 4 2.4 ghz, yea your game will run but will I have to wait for stuff, this is a hard question to answer I know, I don't care about loading the game and starting a gametype
Once the game is started (i.e. you are on a space or ground map), the transitions between maps are relatively quick. Just a few seconds.
Q - will there be a deplomacy option?
Supremacy is about conquering, not about talking.

more questions [:D]
You are a fountain of questions. [:D]
Q - will there be or could there be (in the future) an option to play your turns at the same time like Combat Mission etc, this would be for multiplayer games
This is not a feature in Supremacy. But we are always open to suggestions.
Q - whats the max amount of players you can have in a game?
Supremacy is designed for 1 to 2 players. The game types are player vs AI, player vs player on same machine, and player vs player via network (e.g. internet).
Q - will different technology give you different neat and interesting powers and abilitys as a commander or single units, or is tech just for making your guys stronger, more defensive etc
There are technologies that give you new and interesting powers (e.g. cloaking, orbital blasts, scanning, etc.) as well as technologies that upgrade the stats of your units.
Q - will some story missions be more small scale where you only have a small force
Supremacy has a huge array of maps to play on, some are very small and some are very large. Many are in between.
Q - will some story missions be unique with innovative twist on how to play the level, like mabe an infiltration type thing or . . .um. . . hmmmm
There are many unique game types. I suggest you check out this link for a list.
Q - will there be some kind of espionage
You can gain scanning upgrades that allow you to spy on your enemy (including seeing his cloaked vessels), and the Death Merchant vessels (from Groth race) allow you to kill enemy troops on transport vessels even before they land.
Q - will there be defence towers of some kind on the space map? for like Protect Home Planet gametype
Not in space, no. You could capture nearby planets, and use them as outposts, or you could build a mothership to use it as a mobile "tower" (it can battle as well as produce ships and ground troops). There are Tech Towers on the planet surfaces though; if you touch one you will gain a unique ability until someone else touches the tower.
Q - is there any difference between ground combat and space combat in the guts and inner workings of it, yea they look different, they have different units with different abilitys but do they play similar?
The mechanics are similar, but there are many subtle differences. You could say that space battles are more strategic, while ground battles are more tactical.
Q - in conquest mode or similer modes, how big can the maps be (for space). how many planets can there be in a game, can there be huge epic galactic sized wars, is there a limit to how big and how many planets are in a level?
There are some massive maps for those who want a long game (many days).
Q - does the ai say stuff to you, not in story mode, just text I mean?
Sorry, no. But your own commanding officer continually gives you feedback.

RE: Questions
Q – does space look different in different areas of the map and on other maps
Space will look slightly different each time you play, we've spent a long time making sure it is beautiful. We are aware of how often you will have to look at it, and so we've made every effort to make it stunning. There are sparkling stars, majestic nebulas, and graceful comets. In the distance you can see a dynamic meteor field -- with the meteors slowly moving about. Many current space-based games go for a "cloudy" look in space. This is a nice effect, but we did our best to create a realistic space background. We hope you enjoy it.
Q – what special effects do you got going on, yea I’v seen the screen shots, do you have the glow thing, I forget what its called, it was used quite a bit in Tron pc game and also in a new game called Scrap Land, I like that stuff.
Supremacy has well over 50 different particle effects, and several non-particle special effects. Here are some of the effects you'll see:
- dynamic smoke and gaseous toxins
- flame throwers and ice blasts
- tall flames licking up from the ground after a Cha'ar unit uses its special ability
- massive explosions when Suicide Bombers pull the trigger
- various space vessel explosions
- a planet's core melting down, resulting in surface cracks and a final massive explosion
- all races have a unique "ship propellant" effect
- icy planets have snow
- fiery planets have bubbling volcanic vents
- so many more I can't list them

Q - could there be an automatch feature for playing people at your own level in a future patch, or is there already one (for multiplayer games)
This already exists. In the lounge where you can meet other players, there are different rooms for people who are seeking different playstyles.
Q - do your space units heal when on a planet?
Space vessels heal when adjacent to a friendly planet and adjacent to a friendly Science Vessel.
Q – will you be able to save you offline and online battles as replays to study you game and the opponents
You cannot "record" a game to view it later, but you can save a game at any point. As Haska mentioned in another thread, you can even save a network/internet game.
Q – will there be a story campain for every race and how long are they, or how many levels?
Since Supremacy is open-ended, you create the story by the actions you take. There is no pre-defined script.
Q – are there other characters in the story mode besides the leaders
No, Supremacy is not about characters, it is about strategy and tactics.
Q – how does the camera operate when its your turn, can you fly around with a freeroaming camera?
There are many camera options, so you can view the game in just the way you like. You can fly around with a free-roaming camera, you can rotate and zoom. You can also activate a cinematic camera that will zoom in on important events.
Q – how does the camera operate when its your oponents turn
The camera stays at a fixed location and moves to each visible action your opponent takes.
I hope my answers are helpful to you.

RE: Questions
I have returned
Q – could I make my own story driven maps that could be connected to eachother in a certain sequence, could there be story text within the map at certain spots
Q – is there a campain story mode (single player) or could there be in the future?
Q – could there be a multiplayer co-op mode for a story drivin campain?
Q – it was said that the ai is adaptive, so this means it learns how you play and remembers from map to map? If it does learn like this can it be reset to where it started so someone else can play
Q – will I be able to download new maps from other players that they made, and/or mabe black hammer games? If so then how big of a file are we talking, does it depend much on the size of the map?
Q – is the game coming out soon?
Q - I want the demo too

These are not currently supported, but we're open to suggestions to future patches.
Q – it was said that the ai is adaptive, so this means it learns how you play and remembers from map to map? If it does learn like this can it be reset to where it started so someone else can play
You don't have to worry about the AI getting set in its ways while you play it, and then the AI being too difficult/easy for someone else during the next game. Every time you start a new game, the AI starts with a clean slate.
Q – will I be able to download new maps from other players that they made, and/or mabe black hammer games? If so then how big of a file are we talking, does it depend much on the size of the map?
Yes, this is fully automated. If you connect to someone who has maps that you don't have, you will see icons for those maps in your new game configuration dialog. If you both choose a map you don't have, they will be sent to you before the game begins.
Q – is the game coming out soon?
My sources say yes.

Q - I want the demo too
This is out of the scope of my control, but I have suggested it to the higher-ups several times since you folks keep mentioning it.
Thanks for the interest!

RE: Questions
Q – could a modification be made that lets your units say stuff when they are attacking other units (in text), and people could make there own automated unit combacks, kinda like playing unreal tournement and how the players have auto taunts when they hit each other, yes ut is not a wargame. . .. .well actually it is. . .. just . . . ..different. . .. .and it’s the only fps game I still play.
Q – can you wisper to people in the multiplayer meeting area? (so others can not see what password your game is
Q – is there passwords for games if we so choose
Q – is the filters for mp server game list like non passworded, etc
Q – could there be a buddy list feature in the future?, we’ll have to wait and see if theres enough players I guess
Q – would it be possible for willing people to make there own game types (probibly just for multiplayer cause the ai would be hard to modify)
Q – weird idea here – could a feature come about where if the two players decided before a ground battle they could bet money on the battle if they thought they could win and if the other player accepted they would have to pay the same amount, it would all go into a pool and who ever won the battle would get the money??? Hmmm thinking???
Q – oh oh wait another one, since your with matrix now mabe you could steel an idea from one of there games, called massive assault, you could have secret allies in the map that the player choosses witch planet they hide on and when the enemy attepts to take that planet you get to attack him with your secret guys, though youd need a different name for secret allies I think hehehe
Q – I like the betting thing for some reason? Mabe you could put fees on planets so if some one was gonna attack it they would have to pay there way in first, yes that’s weird. . .hmmmm, wasent there some kind of battle tech thing where the different clans would fight other clans with less of there forces to show how good they were and mabe if they won they would gain something from this action????
I think I need a different letter besides Q now eh. . .. hmmm
I – mabe there could also be side quests like in warlords battlecry series with randome quests, but the quests would be different from normal play because you would have to go to a planet that has a secret cave that is only know to the quest taker, then you have to go into the cave wich would be randomly generated and do what the quest said while exploring, a rogue nethack type game crossed with a wargame, yes it probibly sounds weird to you but it sounds soooo cool to me. . .. hehehe
Q – could there be the possibility to make your own cut scenes in game with the camera?
Q – could there be a “protect the leader” gametype for ground combat (in the future), one sides the attacker, other has to defend, but instead of just giving the attacker some more units because hes the attacker mabe there could be another way to make it a fair fight, mabe like unreal tournement agien, in assault mode in ut the winning team was the one who beat the opposing teams time in finishing the objectives, you could do a round, where each player take a turn attacking and defending and who ever beats the other the fastest wins.
I – mabe during a normal conquest game or similer there could be some kind of duel thing where by the players could agree upon a duel with there best ships or soldiers in an uncharted area of space and whoever wins gets. . .hmm something, but you would have to pay some money to enter the duel because of the emence hyperspace jump costs (and so you can't just keep dueling agien and agien).
more to come
hehehe

RE: Questions
Hi theswitch,
You sure have a lot of ideas, thanks for posting them.
The only questions I noticed are quoted below, with my answer.
The multiplayer lounges do not currently allow chatting, but there are several different lounges depending on game type. So you go into the lounge that matches the kind of game you want to play to find someone to play with.
Lounges are not passworded -- but if you want to play a "secure" game with someone (meaning no one else will join instead of your intended opponent), you could give them your IP, and they could connect to you directly.
There is no built-in buddylist functionality, but if the lounges end up being very popular, we could consider it for a future patch.
Thanks,
Vance

RE: Questions
Hi Vance,
Thanks for answering all of these questions. How close are you to release? Do you know if it will be download only or will there be a boxed version option? If there is a boxed version, will it include a printed manual?
Now I actually have a gameplay question. How exactly will a typical game be played out (mini AAR)? I really don't know how things happen in the game. I know there is a distinct space and land portion to the game, but I don't know the little details inbetween.
Thanks Again!
P.S. Any chance of seeing PBEM incorporated in a patch?

Hi Vance,

You're welcome. We've delivered the gold to matrix, but a few small bugs were found that need to be fixed. We're on it. I can't give a time frame on that, but it should not be long.
It is my understanding that it will be initially available for purchase through online download, but it will also (I believe later) available for purcahse in box form. The box form will include a printed manual.
Now I actually have a gameplay question. How exactly will a typical game be played out (mini AAR)? I really don't know how things happen in the game. I know there is a distinct space and land portion to the game, but I don't know the little details inbetween.
Assuming you play a conquest game, the basic flow is this:
1) The game starts, and you are in space with one or more planets under your control. You may also start with several ships.
2) You execute all of your units (planets, ships, etc.) turns, and then end your player turn.
3) Your opponent does the same.
(steps 2 and 3 repeat until someone transports units -- which are produced with planets -- from a transport vessel to an enemy planet)
4) A ground battle begins, the map changes to the ground map for the given planet. The defending units are on one side of the map, and the attackers units (those he just beamed down) are on the other side.
5) The two players execute actions and alternate turns much like in space until one player has no units left.
6) The player with the last unit standing on the ground battle gains/maintains ownership of that planet, and the game goes back to the space map.
This continues until someone owns all of the planets on the map.
Of course there are many details left out, this is just the very basic game flow -- and remember this is only for the conquest game type. You can also choose to play just a ground game, and lots of other game types for space battles.
P.S. Any chance of seeing PBEM incorporated in a patch?
This is not something we currently plan on including. Future patches are in the future, though, so things may change by then.

Thanks,
Vance
