4.5 Polycount allowances? Bump mapping?

Hi there everybody!

I haven't been around on the StarShatter scene recently, due to me being horribly busy, but now that I return I discover that there's a whole new graphics engine coming, and I've gotta say, I'm stoked.

Anyway, I'm thinking of resurrecting my Black Genesis mod with more cool stuff, and I was curious: What are the polycount restrictions for the new engine? Can it support bump mapping? What about other advanced effects?

Basically, is there some sort of FAQ lying around where I can found out all about modding the new engine? I sure haven't been able to find one...

ive ran 7k ships(with turrents) and it runs fine

the material editor includes bumps and specs and glow, basically its like a cut down version of 3dmax's material editor in magic 2.0

The patch also adds stencil shadows. Performance with shadows enabled is roughly on par with performance before the patch. If you disable them you can push several times as many polys as before at the same speed.

I would guess the ETA is "when it's done" but should be soon, since it's in beta testing.

ya and enjoy getting them working hehehe

right now they use a method that means you can NOT have any sort of double sided polygon, or open objects

basically most people, when they model, tend to basically bash primatives together to form an object, then delete the faces hidden in each others geometry, that causes MAJOR problems with the shadows

even my method of deleteing faces you simple wont see, causes a lot of problems, in fact, if you cut into any polygon for any reason you are going to come up with problems there too.

right now I"m having a lot of problems getting them to work right on any ships I build.

when it works its amazing

your best bet is to run a STL check on the model in 3dmax

and then cry into your pillow when you get 650 errors LOL

spike errors are the worst, if you get those you will REALLY screw up things.

Hehehe, interesting.

Have there been any improvements to Magic? I mean, I assume so, but anything you can reveal? Does it import any new formats? Any new texturing tools in it?

Oh, and what about screenies? Any shots from the new engine been released?

from what I can notice

I get around 45fps now running about 3 6kships(loaded out) with a 2048x1024 background, at least 2 1024x1024 planets(for some reason milos code is not loading the LOW res versions of the planets, at least its not showing up in the log file) and about 4-8 fighters

Hell each cap ship has like 18 turrents
