Gogna... Groger.... Gragnar... I give!
Ok, so the word is Grognard, and I ain't one of 'em... [:)]
However I always liked the Pacific aspect of WWII.
The description for this game says...
Complexity: Advanced - Grognard
Is it just that? Should I not even try?
I find the board game Mouse Trap confusing at times, and have electrocuted myself while drinking a Vodka and playing Milton Bradley's Operation.
Opinions... thoughts... feelings?
Thanks,
Hunter

This game out-grognards almost any wargame I've ever played. It's up there with Advanced Squad Leader, anyway. You have to give orders to hundreds of ships, ground units, and air squadrons. You have to move every crate of supply and barrel of fuel -- plus oil and resources if you play as Japan. You have to move a base force to a base, then supply, before you can station an aircraft there. You have dozens of individual subs under your command. You set altitude for planes. You select leaders.
So if a massive logistical challenge isn't your thing, you might give it a pass. Me, I love it.

No pain no gain. Get your feet wet and join the party! [:)]
Regarding Frank Jack Fletcher: They should have named an oiler after him instead. -- Irrelevant

Hi, We are considering changing the label of people who play WITP from Grognard to Borg.

I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!
RE: Gogna... Groger.... Gragnar... I give!
Ok then...
That makes it sound easier to ease in to. [:D]
Does the game have the ability to delegate tasks? I was in middle management for quite a while, and I could slither right in to that role. [;)]

Yes, you can even play a computer vs computer game. Putting some commands under computer control is good for learning, but once you get the hang of whats going on, you wont want the computer running anything because it does some silly things now and again.

One last question... or point.
Why $70? Mainstream games do not cost this much, why this product?
Thanks for all the info,
Hunter

Because it's the best, most detailed, richest wargame ever produced.
Resistance is futile....

The secret to winning this game is not losing track of what is going on. The problem is that you are trying to keep track of about half of the earth's surface on a daily basis. So we all lose track but they guy who loses track less wins.
There have been long threads on the price and pricing strategy. The game is worth the money, it may actually be worth more than what is charged for it, regardless if the topic interests you buy it.
Read some AARs before you do, they will help with the decision.

It's a niche game, not a mainstream game, so it won't have high-volume sales. Matrix has said it will sell somewhere between 5,000 and 15,000 copies. Even at this price, I dunno if Matrix will get back the years of time and money invested. So $70 seems like a reasonable price-point to me. To be honest, I'd have paid more. Why $70? As others have said, this is the best computer wargame ever made. The level of detail is astounding. But it's not for everyone. It's a traditional hex-based wargame, with a 200-page manual, a 55-page tutorial manual, and tens of thousands of hexes on the map. You'll have to learn the difference between an AV (seaplane tender) and an AK (cargo ship). You'll have to cope with carting supply and fuel around the entire Pacific ocean. The first turn of the grand campaign takes even experienced players hours to set up. Of course, there are shorter, smaller scenarios to get you started.
But yeah, read some AARs to give you a sense of what it's all about. I do hope you take the plunge, but you should also know what you're plunging into.

One thing I can tell you for sure. If you end up loving the game, you will be playing it for years. I'm on year 3 and I find myself checking every day for the next patch so I can get another PBEM game going.[:D]

I'd like to see it as well, but I'd rather wait and make sure its right than rush it and need another.

Well I've downloaded the BIN demo. That one should've been called “for grognards”. I can't get it. Or may be my brain assimilated to much into the borg community, eh?
RE: Gogna... Groger.... Gragnar... I give!
This is certainly the secret to not losing too quickly. But the secret to winning is...well, that would be telling, wouldn't it?[;)]ORIGINAL: Tom Hunter

The game's worth it. That is, if you don't mind hearing the WitP songs in your head even when trying to sleep, work, etc. If you don't mind waking up in a panic, wondering if your AK's will make it to Noumea, or wondering if maybe it wasn't wise to send a pair of CV's into the Solomans, and it's only December 1941.
It took me about 10 tries and 6 months to finally get settled into this game, and all others have been gathering dust ever since.

Hi, We are considering changing the label of people who play WITP from Grognard to Borg.
Most of us are Grognards. Mogami is a Borg......staying in his dark lit apartment day and night plugged into his user interface.....waiting or processing turns for one of his 6-7 PBEM games muttering
Turn Assimulated.....awaiting next turn.
