Disaster
Hi- First, I have loved Gary Grigbsy's Uncommon Valor & WITP. I just got my GGWaW, loaded it, spent mucho $ to upgrade my computer to be able to play the game-AND WHAT DO I GET- Something that Axis & Allies had a number of years ago. After several hours of trying to understand this monstosity< I give up. IMHO HOI & HOI2 are much, much better, for this type of scenario. Boy, was I wrong in buying a reputation.Perhaps, as someone has commented on, if there were a demo for this, I could have saved my $. Hugh Browne

Hugh;
Not really the right location to post a rant. This is the bugs thread.
As an aside, how can you possibly compare this to A&A? Besides it being the world map and relating to world war II, there are really very little similarities. GGWAW is by far the definitive wargame of a grand strategy nature and is so streamlined and efficient as to be at the top of ANY selection of games.
It's too bad you didnt spend a bit more time on it. A little bit of patience and learning and you would realize the magnificent piece of gaming in your hands.

Hi- First, I have loved Gary Grigbsy's Uncommon Valor & WITP... Boy, was I wrong in buying a reputation.
I'm the total opposite - I own Battle of Britain, Twelve O'Clock High, UV and WitP and just don't like any of them, though I really wanted too [;)]
I had no interest in World at War, haven't been following the development at all but the feedback and style of play attracted me. I trully don't understand what you mean by "reputation". Aren't 12OH, UV and WitP still awaiting patches?
So I can tell you this. PC Axis and Allies absolutely lacked in all aspects AI. If W@W offers any improvement in this regard, together with strategic depth - ie: no war winning, Axis capture of South and Central Africa as in AA, then comparing the two efforts just won't make sense imo.
Now, clear rules and interface are another matter and I'm still to weigh up those.
Btw think you've got this in the wrong forum area.
Adam.

You might want to spend a little more time on it. It is after all a war game, not something you become an expert in several hours. The manual is extremely easy to read but you DO have to read it.
As far as your HOI & A&A comments, I have both and completely disagree with you but everyone has a right to an opinion.

RE: Disaster
Sorry you haven't enjoyed the game. Have you run through the 2 tutorials? If you start off with just the movement tutorial and then play the default scenario with computer running production, you should be able to start making headway. The production/research/supply rules are many levels beyond Axis & Allies, but no point trying that until you start understanding the basics of movement and combat. If you've played UV/WitP/HOI 1&2 you should have no problem ultimately understanding this game. Perhaps you just prefer the incredible detail and complexity of these games (especially with regards to WitP). We're not trying to fool anybody about what this game is or isn't. If you read the reviews that have come out and the AAR's that have been posted here, I think you'd get a very good sense of what this game is all about.
All understanding comes after the fact.

RE: Disaster
Unfortunately I must agree to the term DISASTER as the first writer put it, but on different grounds. Just to place a stepping stone, I think this actually looks like a beta version, reasons and details I hopefully will find time and interest to chop down for the developers later. Now, to my more acute problem...the game does not work. Sure it installs and starts, but the PRODUCTION function just does not work, e.g. the three boxes for RES, FACT, and POP are always empty, it is impossible to halt or cancel production, it is impossible to START production. Well put simply, it is impossible to play the game. I have even tried uninstalling the game, DL again, updating sound and video drivers (the latest non-beta driver for SB Audigy ZS is actually the one the Spaniard had, i.e. .0444), switching off sounds and superflous video functions - the production screen still doesn't look any more dynamic than a refrigerator. [here would be a suitable place for a sequence of profane language].

He Gullet,
can it be that you are still in the Movement-Phase and have not ended it yet ?

RE: Disaster
Or that you didn't scroll the region list to a specific region rather that seeing the whole country production - where you can't allocate or change items ? [8|]

That's right! Good, now I am not as pissed off as I was earlier. Although the fix was closer at hand than thought it also highlights a problem for people jumping right in from the tutorials with auto-prod and then playing with auto-prod before turning human-prod on (not reading manuals). Now I will at least be making the list for 2by3/Matrix and take it from there.
Thanks for the instant advice.

RE: Disaster
Like Adam I was going to pass on this game, but I fell victim to all of the Enthusiasm on this board. It is very deep and addictive for a simple game.... And the upcoming patch will make it even better!!!

That´s why there are manuals. To read them. There´s a nice acronym for it. Anybody wants to take a guess [;)]?

I saw BoB at friends - didn't like it. Then totally fell in love with UV, and I consider WITP best wargame of all times. But I doubt we will ever see a game that detailed, development must have been a nightmare, even for very professional team like 2by3.
Finally I love GG WAW a LOT, but on a completely different "level". 2by3 team members, all of them wargaming veterans, just seem to get better with time [:D]
I think it is very important what Joel said: publishers and developers never tried to fool anyone when describing this game. Anyone reading the reviews, AARs, WAW website etc. could have pretty clear idea what this game is and what it is not.

It's a Real-Time-Strategy game that starts right after WWI in which a person can take a tiny country ( such as Lichtenstein (sp?) ) and conquer the world by the year 2085....
Did I get it right??[:D][;)]
