How are Soviets going by '43. I have not played for that long against another person. Where on the map are you and how powerful are your forces?.

Sorry its not answer to the Yak question.

It is 6/44. I don't know if this was a change or the manual was wrong. The Yak-9 is produced until then, and its ratings are fairly close, so quality wise I don't think you lose a huge amount of capability.

The Yak-9 starts production in 10/42 and the La-5FN starts production in 3/43. The La-7 starts production in 5/44 and once you start using those I doubt you will ever produce the Yak-3.

Oh come on Ed, you can do better than that. You actually gave credit to another member of the team? I would have expected more of you than that. I'm sure if you dig far enough, you will find someone, somewhere that will say that the Yak-3 never saw service during WW II, then you can base all of your arguements on that. I'd be willing to bet that, if you went to the Soviet archives (should i send you a URL for those?), you could find a reference that the Yak 3 was available before then. I'm not disrepecting Rick's research, since I know that he actually does it, to work on the OOB's, I'm disrepecting the fact that you would agree with him. Have you gotten the point yet? How much does it cost to buy Ed's loyalty and trust?

Actually, the La-7 didn't start serial production until August '44. This game is showing its age <img src="wink.gif" border="0"> A lot of Soviet archival material has since come out.

So what the Russian shloud do is to build La5FN as soon as it is possible.Focus production on this and the Russian player should have a bundel to spread around!

But what is better? The La-5Fn with the higher manouver or the Yak-9T with the high cannon rating? Somehow i think iv'e botched it in one game by building lots of La-5Fn's instead of the other.

what do people think of the Yak 3 versus the La7. I thought they were both pretty good.
Also do both the yak 3 and the yak 9t upgrade to the yak 9u or only the former?
The problem with swapping production is the massive losses of planes produced. I would like to minimize those losses and still get good quality planes.
If the la7 is best would not it be best to swap all factories to producing la5 in 1942 so they get the la5n advantage as well.

Matthew Buttsworth,

The Yak-9t doesn't upgrade to anything, it is the end of the line like the La-7 and the Yak-9u. The Yak-9t is a fighter-bomber while the other two are pure fighters.

Should productions be focuse on fighter-bombers only ? That way you have something that has a normal dogfight ability but also a punch at the ground roll? Yak 9t is worse than all the german fighters. And La5fn is the only one that can fight almost at the same level.

varjager,

I'm not really an expert on playing the Soviet side but wouldn't think that you would want more than a 2 to 1 ratio in fighters to fighter-bombers. In calculating that ratio, take into account the lend lease fighter-bomber groups. There are 6 of them and when you finally get the P-47Ds and P-63s, there are no better fighter-bombers in the game except the Me-262. The P-47D becomes available in 9/43 and at the rate of 15 planes per week, the game will convert the first P-40 group to P-47Ds in 2/44 if the factory conversion is on computer controlled. Also don't manually convert those lend-lease fighter-bomber groups to Soviet fighters because you can't convert them back manually.

I would also think that the ideal mix of A/C in your best Front HQs would be 2 fighters, 1 fighter-bomber, and a proportional number of bomber groups. The fighters always engage before the fighter-bombers so even though the fighter-bombers have lower maneuver ratings, by the time the opposing fighters fight through 2 fighter groups your fighter-bombers with their higher cannon ratings should be able to do some serious damage.

I don't know about a 2-1 ratio, but on the Soviet side the Yak9t and the lend lease fighter-bombers are decent. Actually, the Yak9t starts out with numbers similar to the current Soviet fighters at that time ('43).

On the German side though, the only fighter-bomber worth the attention is the 262 of course. If I'm controlling production, I'll consider putting one factory on the 262 to speed its arrival, and convert all future fighter-bomber factories to fighter production.
