The Paced Game - Japan AAR Thread

Post by ryanw »

(My AAR should be as rough as they come -- my first PBEM game, my first Matrix wargame -- forgive me!)

I am taking the manual's advice and going after coastal China with everything I have in Turn 1. I've positioned every unit of my airforce now in coastal china, and I was able to take Foochow. It took me a few reloads, as I didn't realize that even though I had a 90% success rate, that partisans instantly generate, so I restarted my turn a few times until I took the territory.

I don't see a way to impact the war significantly through the south pacific, maybe I'll skip Pearl Harbor completely. So I'm thinking of going after China or Eastern SU in a land war.

Of course, I might decide to come to my senses before next turn [:'(]

perhaps you guys are playing by a relaxed code of conduct, but when playing against other players please don't reload just to get better rolls. if they do it against you, you wouldn't be too happy.

Only after posting my first AAR did I discover that it was not a "feature" to allow one to restart a turn to "optimize" it. This is my first PBEM game, looks like I made a blunder in my first turn of my first game -- point well taken aletoledo -- it won't happen again!

but when playing against other players please don't reload just to get better rolls

Note that the game "remembers" the die rolls so it is difficult to reload the turn just to get better rolls.

There is significant intel that can be gained by "do-overs" and should be avoided at all possible cost in playing pbem.

in most cases, if you make an "honest mistake" and do something stupid that will basically ruin the game, I know I have no problem with an occasional "do over" to avoid something really dumb that was done inadvertantly. provided an explanation is given and the turn is "redone" as close to originally performed as possible.

SOme may disagree, but I want someone's "best game" not taking advnatage of their cat jumping in their lap and them miscliking (as happened to me the other night in a game against Gordian Knot - I attacked the wrong Chinese province - but at that point it was easier to live with than try to do a whole axis tun over...[:(] )

repeatdly doing a turn over and over to find "the right moves" is fine agains tth eAi, but against a human, take a while to consider the moves involved and then give it a go - half the fun of wargames is "missing the 3-1 by one factor" in baord gaming - running our of supply or forgetting to do something is part of wargaming and part of what makes it "fun". If everyone optimized their strategy every turn, the game would likely get old fast...

As in real war, taking advantage of lapses and blunders is what makes playing humans so unpredictable and fun!

That said, I think most gamers are fairly leniant when it comes to ocasional mulligans for things that happen that are not 'just part of playing the game'.
